2nd Trimester

Apparently I look like I'm having twins

This is what my grandmother told me this weekend. She asked me more than once if I was sure there was only one baby, and wouldn't drop it after I assured her that three ultrasounds can't be wrong. Then, she said, "you're only 4 months!" 19 weeks, actually, but thanks for reminding me that I'm not even halfway through and am apparently enormous. She told me though that this time I'm all baby, whereas with DS I was "wider across the back." WTF. First of all, I'm not in the mood for these types of comments. Secondly, I've looked at pictures, and as I recalled, I was not wide with DS. I carried him all out front. Yes, I'm bigger now than I was at 19 weeks with him, but hey, second baby and all. And, geez, I'm not that big. I've gained about 10 pounds. Really, what am I supposed to do? Start dieting? I really wish people would just shut up.

  • I hate comments like that. It's as if people think that, because you're pregnant, you suddenly lose any insecurities about people criticizing your weight.

One thing I had to keep in mind when someone said I was too big is that back in "their day", you hid your pregnancy as long as possible with big loose clothing. You didn't want to look pregnant. I think sometimes that older women don't understand how the times have changed.

  • OMG, my mother told me on Easter that there were 2 babies in me this time. I tried to shut her down politely and remind her that I already had an U/S but, she was insistant that her "intuition" was telling her it was twins & look how big I had gotten already. It was at that point I told her to shut it before she wound up in the pool. Embarrassed
  • My mother told me a couple weeks ago that I was "finally getting a little bit fat." No, my baby is growing and my belly is getting larger. It's not the same thing as getting fat. It's very easy for me to put on weight when I'm not pregnant and I always thought that I'd be one of those women who gets super fat when they're pregnant, with a fat puffy face and everything. But surprisingly, all my weight is in my belly and I haven't started to waddle yet. Everyone else is like "oh, look at your cute baby bump!" or "that bump is getting bigger!", which does not bother me at all. But when my mother says I'm getting fat it just totally rubs me the wrong way. Perhaps it is because she's about 80 pounds overweight herself. I've felt pretty hormonal and b*tchy lately, and might be tempted to bring up her weight issue if she keeps telling me how fat I'm getting.
  • Oh, I got the "you're getting fat" comment from my mother and stoped talking to her for a good two weeks.  People can be so stupid sometimes.  It is harder to ignore someone who is a close family member, but that doesn't mean you have to silently tolerate it.

Be frank, "When you comment crtiically about my weight it really hurts my feelings.  I would appreciate it if you would keep your judegement on my weight to yourself.  If you can't then I'll happily cease our visits until after the baby is born and I've returned to my pre-pregnancy weight."

And when they protest just hold firm.  As I basically told my mom, "I don't hear what you mean.  I hear what you say.  The things you are saying are very hurtful, and I'm no longer going to tolerate it.  That is my choice.  Your choice is what comes out of your mouth."

  • My husbands Grandma said the same thing to me.... I think I was just 20 weeks and at that time had a 7lb weight gain.  I just said "no theres one baby but thankyou", and walked away.

People are so rude, even family.  I think to myself I really doubt you would like me to comment on your weight or size, but since Im pregnant its okay to give your opinion on me!

  • I guess I don't mind this question because I am having twins ;)  But people are still rude - one of my mom's friends is always comparing me to someone else she knows that is having twins because her belly is "much smaller than yours".  At my baby shower, my great grandma told me I need to go on a diet because I'm getting fat.  Seriously, who does that?!?!  Old people have no filter.  I've also had several people tell me that my twins are going to be over 6 lbs each because of how big my belly is - I'm so glad everyone is such an expert - I guess I should tell my OB I don't need her anymore lol.
  • I am having twins and I am huge! People keep telling me I look like I am going to 'pop' any minute. What's scary is I still have MONTHS to go! I did see ladies at the OB office though who were way bigger then me and only having one baby so that helped .. some.  HA    =)

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one dealing with this, it makes me want to pull my hair out! People are so rude and downright mean! My MIL makes it a point to say, "Here comes the fat pregnant person" everytime I walk in the room and makes sure to say, "Nice seeing you, Fatty" when we leave. So inappropriate! I am not fat at all and have only gained a couple pounds! Plus, even if I was fat, who says that? Only a gradeschool bully or an evil witch! So uncalled for.

  • A woman not too long ago said that to me because I am so big. I hastily replied "Actually I was pregnant with twins but we lost one. Thanks for reminding me of it". That shut her up!

  • Thanks Big Smile Some people just don't think before they speak. While we lost Baby B at 8 weeks (the heart stopped), the gestational sac kept growing well beyond that so I was a bit bigger to start with. It took my body quite some time to recognize that they baby didn't make it. While I am grateful for what I still have, comments like this still sting a little.
  • I get this all the time when I am pregnant.  It drives me nuts and I wish people would just shut up.  Even after I have assured them that it is only one, I have still had people say "ARe you SURE?!  It looks like it could be two!"  Do they want me to invite them to the next ultrasound or something?!  Oh, and DH's grandfather (with my first pregnancy) wanted to know if it was triplets...........

  • I've gotten the same comments... but my OB says he's measuring large, so that explains it.

OK, this wins as the most evil. What is the mater with her? I hope your MIL is normally much nicer than this!

  • I dont get why every person, even strangers, feel that they can comment on a pregnant womens weight. I had a co-worker when I was pregnant with DS that asked me if I was sure it wasnt twins because I was so big. The best part, I was only about 15 weeks and most people couldnt even tell I was pregnant. She then went on to tell me that when she was pregnant with her first son she had this great picture of her in a swimsuit washing the car and she just looked amazing. She is 60+ years old and overweight, Go ahead and live your glory days women. I have decided people that make those comments to me this time are going to get a good and snarky commment from me this time. I understand in your case it is family, just remember you love her :)
