GTKY -- happy birthdays

We've had a couple of birthdays recently, (HappyWife and Winidpu, maybe others?), we've got a lot of new people, and I think most of us could use a pick-me-up.  So how about a birthday "getting-to-know-you?"  It's been a while since we've done one.

What is your favorite birthday memory?

Re: GTKY -- happy birthdays

  • In 1999, I had a birthday week.  I took a whole week off and did something with friends or family every day.  It was great having fun with people.  I convinced people to play hooky with me during that week!

The best part is that we had a strange cold front in Texas and the highs for the week were in the 80's!  It was fantastic - especially for June.  My brother, sister, and I went to Six Flags on a weekday.  There was hardly anyone there and the weather was amazing.  We rode rides over and over!

  • Easy one.  Last year.   DS was born on my birthday!  Best gift ever and now I can plan awesome parties and pretend they're for him every year!  LOL  Wink  I was going to be induced on Monday the 16th, and so I asked the doctor, "If I'm going to be in the hospital the whole time on my birthday, can I go in Sunday night to get the process started so the baby will be born on my birthday?  I'd be really mad if I spend the whole day in labor and he was born at like 12:02AM on the 17th!"

He completely agreed and good thing... I went in at 9:30pm and Luke wasn't born until 8:15pm on the 16th.

  • I am one of those weirdos that LOVES my birthday and everything about it. I usually have no problem turning older. 38 was the hardest because I was in limbo between 6 failed IUIs and when to start IVF, but I still managed to celebrate to an extent.

I think 34 was the best because I went to Vegas for the first time ever. But 21 was pretty cool too.

If this pregnancy works out though, 39 and 40 will be the best though. And if not....I'll just have to give myself a trip to somewhere exotic to wallow in self-pity.

  • I've always had "fun" birthdays but probably my fav was when I turned 40 and MH totally shocked me by having all my friends surprise me at my favorite country bar. He rented a space out and got me my fav cake! It meant alot since I didn't think he was capable of organizing something likes this and he HATES country music!

I'm sure there are other crazy ones but I can't think right now :) Well...of course my 21st was crazy!!

  • 10-4 -- we should totally hang out once I move to Austin in June. And maybe take a trip to SFOT.

My favorite birthday was also in 1999.  I turned 24, and had my own version of Senior Skip Day.  I was working on Capitol Hill, and 4 of us skipped work and went to Six Flags (the one in VA, not the "real" one).  We started the morning at IHOP (one of the few places in DC where you could get Dr Pepper), then spent all day at Six Flags. Then when we got back in the evening, we couldn't go out to our regular bars since we called in sick, so we went to one friend's apt and drank Miller Lite.  Every single thing about that day was awesome.

Interesting side note:  of the four of us who participated in Skip Day, three of us called in sick.  We later found out that one of us had taken a vacation day, thereby casting suspicion on the rest of us, since we hung out together all the time.  Thirteen years later, that lousy rules follower is my husband!

  • #30 started cruddy but ended up being the kick off to a great year.  I decided to buy a house on my own because I could.

#35 is a fav.  Had started dating my now DH about 4 months prior.  We were living about 75 miles apart.  He blew me off all day and then called after work (it was a Wednesday) and didn't even say happy b-day.  Met a couple of friends at BW3s for dinner and trivia (they were the couple that introduced us).  Shortly after we ordered and I was fuming over how he forgot my b-day, he walks in, all dressed up, with a dozen red roses. One of the first signs I knew he was a keeper.

Here's hoping for a great #39 next month.

  • For me, my best birthdays have been since MH and I started dating-- he's the first person besides my parents to ever throw me surprise parties. Previous to him, I've always had to arrange my own birthday celebrations-- even my friends never threw me a party or arranged a dinner, even though I used to do that all the time for them.

(Boy, that makes me sound like a big loser. LOL)

Anyhow, the first year MH and I were dating, he was still in Maine and I was in CT. I had a standing dinner date with some girlfriends at my friend's Irish pub for my bday and I was waiting outside the pub, across the street on some steps, reading and I see this guy who looks just like MH across the street, walking towards the pub. I call him up to say, "I just saw your doppleganger!" and he said he wished he could be there, blah blah blah and it sounded like he really was doing what he claimed (babysitting his nephew), but when I sat down in the pub with my friends who were asking about this new guy in my life, over he walks from the bar to our table. He said, "I couldn't miss your birthday!"

Runner-up, I think, though was the year before. I always always always used to get the same meal at that pub for my birthday: baked brie, Irish steak, and guinness chocolate cake w/ a guinness to wash it down. But that year, my friend who owned the bar came in and saw me-- sent me a 2nd beer. Then an old rugby friend happened to be bartending that night-- sent me a 3rd and a 4th beer. By the time I got to the chocolate cake, I was fit to burst-- and promptly did on the sidewalk by my car, saying to myself between heaves, "What the heck is wrong with you, puking on the sidewalk like some little twinkie co-ed who can't hack a few beers?!?" My three girlfriends were in hysterics, laughing so hard. And the next day I got the best email of a poem in my honour with the title "Ode to Throw-up Girl on the Anniversary of her Nativity." Good times!

  • Three Birthday's stand out in my mind. I am also an April Baby (12th).

16th- my father planned a camping trip for me. I still do love to camp.

20th - My boyfriend at the time didn't talk to me most of the day and my parents were out of contact. Then there a knock on the door. When I opened it I saw a small fire. My boyfriend had placed 20 candles on a single serve cake and lit them all. I was afraid it was going to burn down the house.

around my 30th  - My friends and I went to the East Coast for the first time. We spent the day looking for a chicken plaque and finding Plymouth Rock. Finished the day with lots of crab.

  • My family threw me a surprise 30th Birthday Party that I ended up ruining the surprise by seeing my Granny in town before the "surprise"  It was really funny!

  • Today is my birthday as well and I would have to say this birthday was pretty good for me despite starting FP today. Yuck!

My best friend also has an April birthday so we decided to celebrate our birthdays together for the first time since my 30th. She lives in Iowa so I only get to see her maybe once a year. I went to see her last week and we just hung out, talked and shopped. It was a very relaxing week. My 30th was pretty special too since this was the only birthday I've ever had a party for. Lots of family and friends.
