Just found out my doctor prefers to induce?

I was talking to my doctor yesterday, and I told him I planned to go natural (which is said is totally my choice, and supports me 100percent) I asked if we needed a birth plan. He said that he doesn't do written birth plans, he said to much can change for both mother and baby by time delivery comes. That's when he told me he only is available to deliver on Wednesdays (Unless he is on call). So he said he likes to induce that Wednesday before or the Wednesday of the 40th week.

Kinda took me by shock, as that's the first time he mentioned this. I am a little concerned, especially since I plan to go natural. I didn't want ANY medication or any assistance during child birth. Can anyone give me their experiences with being induced? I'm am officially nervous now!

  • I wouldn't choose to be induced for that reason. I would wait to go into labor naturally and just deliver with whichever doctor is on call. The OB is hardly there during your labor anyway, it's all on the nurses.

  • It sounds like you don't want to be induced. Just say no. As  long as you're ok with another doctor delivering you, he can't make you go in for a voluntary induction.
  • it sounds like if you want to avoid an induction you'll need to just be aware that he likely won't be delivering your baby.

  • Wow -- that's aribtrary as hell and a horrible thing to spring on you at this point.  I'd be tempted to either find a new doctor or just let it go.  The reality is doctors are only there to catch and you're not post dates until 42 weeks so there's really no reason to induce prior to 40 weeks or even immediately after - especially if you want to go into labor naturally and do a med-free birth.

  • I don't know if it's like this in every city.. but I have known since the beginning that there was a good chance my doctor would not be delivering my baby. He has been amazing through all my prenatal apts. but I would not induce just to fit his schedule... When you go into the hospital to deliver I get whatever Dr. is there or on call. It is impossible for my Dr to be ready for every single women he has seen.

If i were you I would just deliver whenever your baby wants to come! Let it go naturally and if you Dr is there great, if not that's fine too...

Good luck with everything, make sure you are comfortable with whatever you choose that is the most important thing!!

  • Thank you ladies. As much as I wanted my doctor to be at the delivery I really do NOT want to be induced. I had only imagined that as a possibility if I went past full term. Hadn't even considered the fact that he can't force me to induce hah. I was just so freaked out at the idea itself. When it comes down to it I am going to refuse the induction unless I need it for medical reasons. I want to go natural, and natural I shall go! *determined*

  • Get a new doctor...he's clearly telling you he's not going to be supportive of your natural birth imo. Never too late to change docs, and don't let him bully you into anything. Inducing for convenience when a child isn't ready to be born yet, often leads to a cascade of interventions...which is NOT in the best interest of your child.

Sure things can happen in labor, but my birth plan was VERY helpful in informing the nurses and doctor of my wishes...and they worked hard to help me stick to it.

(ps...there is a "natural birth" board on here too).

  • I am 37 weeks and also was just blind-sided by my doc at my last appointment,  I had discussed my desire to have a natural birth with them and was assured they were "natural birth friendly".  After talking more in-depth about my birth plan last week with one of the three docs, who I didn't have any appointments with since 1st tri, she made it clear she will fight me on everything in my birth plan and her idea of a "natural" birth is just not getting an epidural.  I am in the process of trying to switch to a midwife group this week.  It's stressful to be trying to do this so late, but I no longer trust my doctors to let me have the experience that I want.

You will absolutely NOT be able to have a true natural birth experience if you are induced -- pitocin requires you to be in bed, hooked up to an IV and monitors all the time and makes contractions much more painful than they would be on their own, thus making it harder to labor without pain relief meds.  It also increases your chance of developing a fever, which will cause your doc to instantly press for a c-section because they can't tell if the fever is caused by the meds or by an infection.

For your sake, I recommend finding someone new ASAP.  Don't wait until the last minute like I did.

So freaking ridiculous! If he didn't want to work around a baby's schedule HE shouldn't be an ob. I totally understand trying to schedule c-sections on a certain but hell no to inductions being standard! I would refuse or just get a new doc.

  • WHAT! I would be so ticked off, so what percentage of his patients does he actually deliver if he is only available one day out of the freaken week?! I am so sorry you are just finding out about this so late in the game. I would be furious.

Don't get induced just to have him delivery your baby. I mean it's your call, but I wouldn't. I don't want to be induced if I don't have to, and would be even less reluctant if the only reason I was to was to have this Dr. who should have mentioned this at your FIRST appointment be there. Nope, not getting induced to fit your schedule buddy.

Wow, I think I might be more upset then you are. LOL

  • Ugh that sounds absolutely miserable! I know for a fact that I would not be able to handle everything that comes along with an induction. I am certain I will end up abandoning my wishes, and will end up feeling extremely guilty if I get an epidural despite my desire to go natural. I don't want to go through that, and I certainly do not want a C-Section. Being hooked up to an IV sounds awful! I want to be able to walk around, I already have back pain, so I couldn't imagine having to lay in bed the whole time.

I am at a complete loss as to how to even go about getting a new doctor. Do I have to tell my current doctor? Or do I just disappear. I know he would find out regardless once the new doctor requested my file right? I just really hate confrontation, and dealing with all of this part. Doctors make me nervous.

I think at this point I am still in shock, being mad will come later haha. I was just insistent at the first appointment asking if he would be delivering the baby, who would be if he wasn't, etc. And he never mentioned induction to fit his schedule till today! I know it comes down to my choice, he just told me that if we don't induce someone else would be delivering. Honestly, as much as I wanted to be able to KNOW the doctor who delivered my son, I'd much rather go natural and avoid any unnecessary complications.

Have you looked into switching to a midwife? They are much better option if you really want a med-free birth - and they are with you the whole labour, not just at the end to catch the baby...

  • I had not considered a midwife, as I wasn't exactly sure how to go about that. Also I am sadly on medicaid for the time being since we lost our insurance when my husband got out of the air force. We were hoping to have regular insurance by now, but that isn't an option at the moment. So I wasn't sure if a midwife accepted medicaid. I honestly dread the idea of switching doctors this late in the game. Honestly though, aside from him seemingly like a good doctor, I picked him under the premise that he would be delivering the baby, as I didn't want a doctor I didn't know to be the one to deliver. Had I know that turning down an induction would mean he wouldn't be the one to deliver anyways, I would have decided to go with a doctor who delivered at my first choice hospital, instead of the one I will be at currently. It's really all such unnecessary stress, that could have been avoided if he'd mentioned this from the start.

Is there a way you could schedule some appointments with the other doctors who might be on call?

Where I go, they rotate me around to all the doctors so I've at least met them all. They all see patients in the same office, so that might be different for you. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Good luck! Stick to your guns Smile

  • Well my doctor is the only one within his practice. I have never even seen another doctor around, so I have no idea who would be delivering. The practice I was going to go to works like you said yours does, but at the time I wanted only a single doctor. Didn't realize that the other practice probably would have been better. Hind sight is 20-20 though.

  • I would either find a new doctor, or accept the fact that he may not be the one to deliver you if you go into labor on a day that's not a Wednesday.  Being induced is going to make a natural delivery more difficult, and its a completely unnecessary intervention if you're less than 42 weeks along (assuming you don't have any other medical issues that would necessitate this).  He may say he supports your decision to have a natural delivery, but his actions speak otherwise.

  • That is a horrible reason for him to induce you. I'd find a new doctor or just tell him that's not an option. There is no reason for you to be forced into medications that are unnecessary. Fight for the type of birth you want! This is your birth and you want to make it everything you have dreamed of!

Agreed.  Both with my DD and DS, I never even met the doctors before delivery.  I went to practices with a lot of doctors and just happened to never meet who delivered me.  I didn't care honestly.  They were there for such a short period of time.  I would not induce for this reason.

  • that is really strange that he only delivers on Wednesdays when he is the only doc in his practice.  My doc is the only one in the practice and that just means he is ALWAYS available unless he were to fall ill or be out of town for some reason.

  • Just for the rcord, when I was on Medicaid, it covered the Birth Center I gave birth at. I remember reading that Obama made it so Medicaid was guaranteed to cover Birth Centers, and hence, Midwives. :) Google it.

agree- don't be induced just because it works with his schedule... that's weird

I agree, 100%. If there's no medical reason to induce, then DON'T! Especially if you want to go natural. Inducing b/c of his schedule is a terrible reason and he sounds like an unethical and lazy doctor. Ultimately you don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with, and in your case I wouldn't be comfortable with his plans for induction.

As PP said, the doctor is really truly hardly ever there during delivery, so I'd wait for it to happen on it's own and deal with whatever doctor is on call. When I had my DD, the first time I saw the dr was about 4 hours after I arrived at the hospital and he came to break my water (my request). It took 2 seconds. Then he came back when I was pushing a half hour later. Since I only pushed about 3 times and had no damage, he was, again, only with me for about 5 minutes. Literally. He was a good guy and a good doctor, but the nurses do so much that the dr isn't really involved with normal healthy deliveries.

  • Find a new doctor or come to terms with the fact that your doctor probably won't be delivering your baby.

If you want to go natural, don't get induced. Induction sucks and is more likely to lead to a c-section. Do not let him induce you for convenience.

  • Wow that's crazy.  Either get a new OB or if you don't mind who delivers you tell him you'll take your chances with who is on call when the day comes.

  • That is really odd... Is it a practice of more than one doctor? At mine, whoever is on call will deliver the baby. I've met them all and am completely fine with it. What a lazy idiot... Only delivers on Wednesday's... What a freaking joke. I would object to his plan to induce you and or I would be finding a new doc. It sucks but that seems like crazy pants.
  • I've officially decided: NO INDUCTION. I plan to let him know at my appointment on May 7th. If he insists or isn't supportive then I will change doctors immediately.
