Success after IF

Those who have clotting disorders. . .

I know this is far-fetched, but I thought it was worth seeing if anyone can relate!

So, I kind of/ maybe have clotting disorders.

I *definitely* test positive for clotting disorders (at least 3 different ones) when pregnant.   (So much so that my specialists believe that's what caused/ contributed to me developing HELLP at only 20 weeks.)  I'm not allowed on traditional BCP for the same reason.  When not pregnant/ on hormones. . .I only test positive sometimes.  My hemo has labeled them "transient."

Anywho.  Clotting disorders make your blood extra "sticky"/ prone to clotting, right??

Then why the heck do I bruise so easily??!

For the past several months - maybe even since DD was born - every time I so much as touch my leg, it bruises.  I'll wake up with giant-sized, super-ugly bruises that will last for weeks - with no idea how I got them.

To my knowledge, one is more susceptible to bruising when one's blood is thin - no?  So even if I don't currently  have clotting-disorder-blood (in other words, thick blood) - it certainly wouldn't be abnormally thin. . . right??

I'm confused, but not overly worried. . . I don't think.  I haven't done anything to figure this out because I haven't seen my hemo in several years since my MFM just managed me during pregnancy (and, um, I've been pregnant for the past 4 years straight ;/ ) and he (my hemo) doesn't think I need managed by him on a regular basis. So it would seen a bit dramatic to call him up out of the blue after all this time, kwim?

Re: Those who have clotting disorders. . .

  • I am anticoagulated when pg (LDA and Lovenox) but haven't taken any blood thinners in nearly a year.

  • My only clotting disorder is MTHFR and I am only on extra folic acid for it so not sure it's the same but I bruise so easily and always have. My mom has factor V Leiden and also bruises very easily...she was only on thinners during pregnancy. No idea why it works this way. Oh, neither of us can take BCP.

  • I've always bruised easily but I also have had a DVT so go figure.  Additionally, while on blood thinners during my third pregnancy I had super huge blood clots while I was miscarrying.  That never seemed to make sense to me either.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
