Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Baby with allergies/sinus junk

I called my doctor yesterday because DD has had a ton of boogers, some coughing, and overall allergy-like symptoms (the same that my husband and I have had, lately too). She hasn't had a fever and has been eating/drinking/peeing/pooping well so they didn't recommend she come in just yet. I have been trying all sorts of things to alleviate the discomfort that allergies bring, which includes a lot of suctioning of boogers, warm baths, humidifiers, and just keeping her indoors until the pollen stops swirling.

Does anyone else have any tips to help babies with allergies? When should I take her to the doctor? I didn't really want to wait until she had a fever -- I don't know if babies can take anything for their allergies, but if she is miserable like this for a week I'm thinking about taking her in anyway. A website I read recently said 9 months is too soon to determine if your baby has sinus issues, but is it really? Allergy season is HELLABAD here in Memphis, so it doesn't really surprise me. What do you think?

  • My baby also seems like he has allergies when we (DH and I) are bothered most by the pollen.  He never gets a fever but gets itchy runny eyes, nasal drainange and sneezing. I brought it up to the pedi this past fall and spring and got the brush off both times.  He says LO is too young for allergies.  Whatever, I don't believe the pedi and we are going to a new pedi as of next month anyway due to other issues.

  • Both of our sons have seasonal allergies--and even the allergists have agreed that although technically a child must cycle through one year of seasons to HAVE seasonal allergies--they agree that they have them even before that.  Because of that, they've put them on children's zyrtec at night--1/2 tsp.  It's made a miracle difference.

The rule of thumb is congestion in the sinuses for more than 2 wks could be a sinus infection--they'll treat with antibiotics first.  We did that over and over with DS1--never helped.  It was always allergies.

One thing I learned is just by them looking in to the nose, they can tell by the color of the skin if the person is prone to allergies.  I never knew!

  • Zyrtec - has been our salvation this spring for baby girl.  Call your pedi's office to verify dose (it is approved for use in infants this age), based on your DD's body weight.   It was suggested by our pedi.
