Heartburn meds

Am I the only one on a Rx for heartburn?  My acid reflux (which I have never had before) got so bad that I actually vomited stomach acid one night (sorry, TMI) so I have been taking Ranitidine (Rx Zantac) for the past month.  Everything I read online say that it is fine for pregnancy.

Even on meds, I have to avoid certain foods, eat small amounts, and not eat close to bedtime.  Although I *am* dreaming of the ice cream bar I have in the freezer...

How are you dealing with this?

Re: Heartburn meds

  • i'm in the exact same boat- never had any problems before pregnancy, but as of last week I am also now on the rx zantac... it's definately way better than it was, but i still get a little bit of reflux if i don't pay attention to what i'm eating.

  • I'm on Zantac as well one thing that I found helps a lot with acid reflux is aloe juice. I had never heard of it but it really took the sting out of it for me

  • I'm actually goIng to ask my doctor at my appointment tomorrow what I should take. Lately my heartburn is out of control. Like you, I never had heartburn before. I also threw up the other night from it. It sucks. :(

  • Ladies, I am so sorry!  It is SUPER disgusting.  If you are waiting for meds, I found that warm milk (non fat) with some cinnamon sugar (I am not a warm milk drinker) is the best home remedy I had around. Normally I would never drink this but it does help.

Tums, etc. did not work at all.  I am going to try some aloe like the pp suggested.  Although personally I find that texture nasty, it has got to be better than this!  My doctor said if the Zantac stops working I can try Prevacid.  I am going to try to stay with the Zantac if possible.  I feel guilty taking anything at all, but not guilty enough to keep puking.

I hope you find some relief!  Does it make you feel better to know that I peed my pants a lil bit when puking up acid?!????  TMI!  Probably not but hopefully I at least made you laugh :)

  • I am right there with you.  I have been on the Ranitidine for about 2+ months and at my appointment last week needed to talk to my Dr. about the flair ups I was having so she actually changed my medicine to a different one.  It seems to be working & the flair ups have stopped.  Before my last pregnancy I had never had heartburn.  During that pregnancy & this one it has been there.  Luckily once I delivered last time it went away, so hopefully it will this time too.

  • I have acid reflux disease and have been on meds for 10 years. I was taking Priolisec before I got pregnant but since there are no studies on it's effects during pregnancy they switched me to Zantac. That med doesn't do jack so I asked for a different one and they switched me to Nexium, which has been a god send! I highly recommend it!
  • I am on that med too and thank goodness for it!! I really don't have much of an appetite b/c of the reflux and I eat small and frequent meals making sure that the dose doesn't have a chance to fully wear off, especially at bedtime. I had it bad with DS1 and thankfully it went away immediately after delivery. I can't WAIT to have this baby so that the reflux will go away.

  • I'm not on anything prescription, so mine can't be nearly as bad as you guys, but I found Tums to be useless, but Gaviscon works decently.   So if you're waiting to get in to the doc, that might be something to try.
  • I swear my Rx Zantac have saved me from a life of heartburn and acid reflux hell.  Ask your OB about it.
  • My Dr. told me to take prevacid.  Haven't had heartburn since. :)
