Success after IF

baby throwing up question

DD has been projectile vomiting 1-2X per day for the past few weeks.  Sometimes its right after she eats other times its hours later.

I called the Dr. and she thinks its just normal and as long as she has wet diapers to not worry...easier said then done.

An hour or so ago she vomited right after eating (BFing) and then was crying a lot.  Should I feed her again?  Do you think she's hungry?

She's already on Zantac for reflux but it doesn't always seem related b/c sometimes she is fine after she vomits and not upset.

Sorry for the rattle...a little sleep deprived over here.

BTW, she's 6 weeks old if that matters

Re: baby throwing up question

  • one of my twins did that - not as often- but when it happened it was EVERYTHING coming out and projectile. It would happen every couple days- without warning - and we couldn't ever really figure out a pattern - we tried it all - propping, holding him on our chest for a while after eating, etc... nothing ever really worked.

he was never upset by it - and would be more hungry sooner than normal- but in general it was fine- he was gaining weight fine - so the doc never really cared about it.

zantac won't stop the vomiting- it will just make it less painful b/c there won't be so much acid in it.

once she is older it will go away... around 7mo when he started sitting up he stopped doing it.

ironically his twin WAS on zantac- and RARELY spit up at all - he had silent reflux that caused pain and weight gain issues... go figure.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I'm no expert, but it sounds like a combination of reflux (which she is already being treated for, as you said) and happy spitting. V was like that up until he was about 6 months old. He was clearly experiencing reflux related discomfort at times (he was on Zantac too) and then...clearly not at others. The non reflux related vomiting has something to do with their esophagus needing to "tighten up" if I remember correctly. I think it typically happens around 5 months or so (V was right on track for this timeframe because he was about a month early). I think she will most likely grow out of both the reflux and the esophageal immaturity naturally.

  • My DS was similar, a happy, growing, little volcano of puke....I was so tired of cleaning up puddles of my hard earned breastmilk and so tired of doing laundry! :)  Two things that helped us (besides time):  making sure that we adjusted the dosage often enough to compensate for his quick growth....and..sorry to say, but I went dairy free and it helped a ton!!  might be worth a try!
