Cloth Diapering

Do you wake your newborn to change them?

Is this a dumb question? :-/ I see so many people say you should change your newborn every 1-2 hours but mine sleeps so much that I'm only changing every 3-4 hours usually (twice he's slept 5 hours!) because I don't wake him up to change him. Tell me I'm not doing this "wrong"...

Re: Do you wake your newborn to change them?

  • When DD started sleeping for longer stretches, we just used more absorbent diapering options so we wouldn't have to wake her to change.  We did change every time she woke until she stopped pooping in the middle of the night though.

  • I didn't CD a newborn but I never woke her to change her!! If she was sleeping I was thankful - haha! I would use a more absorbent diaper now that your LO is sleeping more to anticipate longer stretches.

  • I have no advice, but am staring at my DD wondering the same thing. We just started using cloth today and use prefolds and covers. She's not leaking through anything, I just don't want any wetness to irritate her cute little bottom.

Ditto. The only time he's leaked has been user error in putting the diaper on (and it was BG XS, I didn't have it tight enough) but he's never leaked otherwise. I just wonder about it irritating his skin.

Glad to hear I'm not committing some parenting crime though ;)

  • Leave the sleeping baby sleep. Unless they have a bad diaper rash, and poop. It is not worth it.

  • We never wake her up to change her. But she sleeps in a big nighttime diaper (basically a double stuffed BG 4.0). But she never poops at night nor does she get rashes.
  • Oh gosh no.  Unless they've pooped at some point.  If you are worried about bums staying dry, you can throw in a piece of fleece between the diaper and bum and that will provide a stay dry layer.  Cheap fleece from the fabric store cut into rectangles works great!

  • My DD sleeps 12 hours in a fitted at night - her bum is fine in the morning. Eventually your child will sleep longer and will be in that diaper for a long time. Its ok to leave the baby in the diaper for longer than 2-3 hours (unless there's poop).

  • Don't wake him.  I would just make sure it's absorbent enough with a fleece liner.  When they start sleeping 12 hours at night they also aren't peeing as much because they're not drinking in the middle of the night.  But he can wear a prefold with a liner for 3 hours or so.  Sometimes he poops before lunch but isn't wet and doesn't need a change after lunch and before his nap.  If he's not waking up because he's too wet then you're golden.  I doubt he would get a rash just from pee.

Haha that would have been very nice at 8 weeks! It took us a long time to get her to sleep that long!

it took us until 15 months so you're already way ahead of us! but 8 weeks would have been INSANE, lol.

This exactly! Never wake a sleeping baby. Unless there's poop. And fleece liners rock!

  • not related to diapering, but as long as baby has reached birth weight and (if you are nursing) your supply is ok, you can let them sleep. Some newborns sleep a lot and do so because they arent getting enough nutrition, but if they output of the diapers is ok and your supply (if bfing) is good, dont wake the baby.

If baby isnt at BW yet, I would not let him sleep more than 4 hours at a stretch at night. Or if you have any supply issues.

my supply is out of control and lo was back up to his birth weight by day 5, so we're good to go there. he's just a good sleeper, maybe because he's got such a full, happy belly!

  • We never woke DS, but he stopped soiling his diapers at night when he was a few weeks old. We just change him after each feeding.
