Order of teeth?

My lo has his bottom 2 teeth only.. Will the top two be the next to come in? I do not see any signs of them.... What is the next tooth to come through usually? Can they go out of order? What about molars? DO they happen after the 1st 8?

Re: Order of teeth?

  • We only have nine teeth and they came in the following order:

    -bottom 2 center incisors

    -top 2 center incisors

    -bottom 2 outer incisors

    -top left outer incisor

    -top two molars

    This is a good guide:

  • Sofamonkey posted this on our BMB and it's very helpful!

That said, DS' came in early and a bit out of order. He got top canines first, then bottom molars and canines at the same time, then top molars.

  • N's bottom middle two came in first (together), then his top middle 4 all at once, then his bottom right, then his bottom left.  I have no idea which to expect next or when.

  • The posted guides are helpful, but their teeth can come in in any order.  For example, my DD got her 2 bottom front, then 2 upper front and a lateral incisior by 10 mo.  A month later she was sporting her first molars.  She's 14 mo now and has all 4 first molars and is working on her 2 lower incisors, the other upper one and a canine - all at once.
  • DS got his:

    bottom 2 incisors

    top 2 incisors

the ones on each side came randomly, bottom, top, top , bottom

then he got the top left molar, bottom right molar, bottom left molar, top left molar.

he still has gaps where his canine teeth should be.

  • My dd got her bottom front teeth together in January, and today, more than 3 months later, the top 4 seem to be coming in. I can feel them but can't see them yet. So they can take a while to come through.

It can really vary.  LO got his in the following order (he always got at least 2 teeth at a time):

    -lower central incisors ~3 months

    -upper central incisors ~7 months

    -upper lateral incisors ~8 months

    -lower lateral incisors ~9 months

-all four canines and all four molars basically at once in a 6 week period beginning right after his first birthday.  I can't remember the exact order but I believe the canines cut first.

  • The posted orders above are good references, but it varies so much that it doesn't really correlate.  However, most patients I see usually get bottom central incisors first, followed by upper centrals, followed by upper lateral incisors.  After that, it's really all over the place both in terms of order and timing.

For example, for my LO's age, he technically should have 10 or so teeth.  He has 6.

  • My DD is a very slow teether and she balks at the typical order.

-- She got her bottom central incisors as a pair at 9 months old.
-- Next came a bottom lateral incisor (ride side) at 13 months old.
-- Most recent was a top central incisor (left side) at 16 months (it's still just a poke).

FWIW, she's got about 8 teeth right at the surface - where they've been for a month, but the ones I listed are the only ones that have made a real appearance.
