Does weight gain stop near the end?

I read that for most people weight gain stops around 37 weeks and some people lose weight in the last couple weeks.  Has anyone found this to be true?  I'm a healthy weight and I've had a text book pregnancy so far and I'm wondering if people really notice a hault in weight gain or a loss near the end?

I heard that about a pound a week is normal in these last few weeks. I'm sure it's different for everyone though.

  • Lets see... for me I lost a couple pounds 2 weeks ago, and before that had remained the same weight for a couple weeks, and last appointment had not gained any weight.  Between last week and this week though it seems I have randomly gained 3 lbs.  So I think it slows down but things such as water weight are still a factor near the end. But everyone is different

  • Some people do.  I have lost since roughly 28 weeks, with a couple of spikes of water retention weight.  But in general I've lost about a half pound to a pound each week here at the end - which is funny, considering how big the baby is.  So long as you continue healthy eating, it's not a concern.  Sometimes, it's simply water weight, as amniotic fluid levels drop some, and I don't know about you, but I feel like an incubator - I'm constantly hot and it's not uncommon to have some night sweats which will also lower water weight.

  • I had a little weight plateau a couple of weeks ago  - probably around 33/34 weeks(I am now 37 wks, 4 days) but have gained a 3-4 pounds in the past two weeks.  I had hoped that I was done but I think not unfortunately!
  • Definitely isn't true for me.  I thought it was going to be the case, because I only gained half a pound from wks 32-34 and was doing really well overall (34 weeks weight gain total was 19 pounds).  Unfortunately, my weight started ballooning up at that point and I have gained 6 pounds in the last 3 weeks, in spite of not eating any more than I was before.  I'm hoping it doesn't keep up at this pace!

  • In my first pregnancy, I gained more per week in the last few weeks than I did at any other time.

  • I'm only 32 weeks, but I'm not gaining like before. I can't really eat as much as I could before and I am not as hungry as often. In the end, while baby is growing bigger, if you're staying the same weight, then you're actually losing weight. It's normal for it to slow down, stop or for you to lose some because of how hard it is to pig out like 2nd Tri.
  • Last pregnancy I lost two pounds in the last two weeks before dd was born.

  • For my first pregnancy, starting at my 37 week appointment, I was up 20, 21, 22, 21, and 20 lbs total.  (I delivered at 41w6d). Lost just a bit at the end.

  • Last time my weight gain seemed to stall at 37-38 weeks until delivery... This time it's just kept going up and up :(
  • I've lost about 4.5 pounds over the last month, and since then my weight has held steady.
  • Honestly, I am beginning to wonder if there is anything we can define as what is "normal" during pregnancy lmao. Everything seems to "differ from pregnancy to pregnancy".

Personally, I gained 30 pounds as of 27 weeks. I am now 32 weeks and I haven't gained anything. I haven't changed my eating habits in the past several weeks and I certainly haven't started any new work out routine. It's just what my body decided to do. Which is totally okay with me. I am hoping that I manage to stay pretty level for a few more weeks, so that my overall weight gain stays within the normal range. But who knows? haha.

Though like a couple previous posters said, I heard the average is a pound a week.

  • Baby still grows quite a bit from 37-40 weeks, so I would expect weight gain because of that and to fuel the incredible brain, lung, and body growth happening. I think I gained something like 7 lbs in that time (it was abnormally quick weight gain). Now, NB reading materials encourage moms that from 40-42 weeks babies really slow down. So, if you go past your EDD, I wouldn't worry too much about that. Your body will do what it needs to do to prepare both baby and you for the days and weeks ahead!
