Baby Names

Mariel or Marielle

I have a friend who we are considering naming the baby after. We have spoken with her, asked her and she loves the idea and actually suggested we use it, and even change the spelling if we'd like.

Her name is pronounced Mar-e-elle.(Mar like the ocean)  But she said growing up it was often mispronounced : Mare-e-elle.  (Mare like a horse) What do you think... should we keep it Mariel, or change it to a more phonetic looking Marielle?  Or is it too "out there" and people will just screw it up all the time and we should head back to brainstorming for a different name?

We also considered adding an a at the end: Mariella?

Re: Mariel or Marielle

  • Mariel= mare-ee-ell to me.  Marielle= mah-ree-ell.  So I would change the spelling depending on what pronunciation you want.

I'd say it depends on how you want it pronounced. I've always hear Mariel as /Mah ree ul/.

  • They both look like mare-ee-el to me (like Ariel in Little Mermaid). I thought the difference was in emphasis (Mariel like Ariel vs Marielle like Mary-ELL). I would spell it differently if I were you, but I don't even know how that would be...? Sorry I'm no help.

  • Marielle. Mariel looks like Muriel with a switched vowed to me.

  • I am not usually a fan of adding extra letters to a name, but possibly Marrielle would make people pronounce it properly

Yeah, same here. I don't think you need to change the spelling, though. I think Marielle looks a little prettier, but both spellings are fine.

  • I love Marielle. It was at the top of our list for DD. Mariel rhymes with Ariel from The Little Mermaid IMO.

  • I like Marielle. It not only has the phonetic looking spelling, it looks prettier.

  • My cousin is Mariel, so I'm partial to that spelling. To me Mariel sounds like Ariel, but Marielle sounds like mary-elle.
