Hi Ladies,
I am a FTM who wants to cloth diaper and so far really like bumgenius. I've had a look at your FAQ and still have some questions. I currently live in the UK, so some options like Jillian's Drawers are not available to me.
I would prefer to cloth diaper from birth, but that might not be an option. DH and I went to a Baby Show and there were a few brands there and we really liked bumgenius.
We liked the snaps and adjustable size, the material seemed good quality and very absorbent. I also thought that the total cost was reasonable.
Can anyone give me a recommendation for bumgenius first hand? Good, bad? Also what would you recommend using for NB as I've read they start best when the baby is about 10lbs.
Thanks in advance!
Re: Anyone use Bumgenius?
I bought some used BG 4.0's a few weeks ago to give my husband some more velcro options (he thought he'd like snaps, but he much prefers velcro). They are the first BGs I've ever had, and I like them a lot. They definitely would not have fit my son as a newborn. They started fitting ok at 10 pounds, and now that he's over 12 pounds they fit really well. I like the suedecloth lining, my son doesn't like feeling wet and these do 'stay dry' longer. I'm working on getting my husband to agree to more!
As a newborn, we used prefolds and covers, fitteds and covers, and Kawaii little green bamboo pocket diapers (supposed to fit 6-20 lbs). Two of the fitteds are Tots Bots bamboozle, small size, and I love them! They still fit and I'll be sad when they no longer fit him! Tots Bots are made in Scotland, so you might be able to find them locally or closer to you (cheaper shipping?). For our next baby I'd like to buy some Rumparooz Lil' Joey all-in-one diapers. They have a snap-down front so they won't rub the umbilical cord stump. I showed my husband a review of them on youtube and he's sold!
I think if you search "candidmommy" you can find the video.
ETA: Check facebook for local mom swap and shop groups, that's where I found my used BGs, and I saved a ton of money on them that way. You might also find some other cloth diapers that you want to try, and meet other cloth diapering parents in your area!
i've tried a lot of brands, and BG is still my favorite by far!! they are holding up much much better than anything else i have.
i'm not sure what your options are in the UK, but i buy all of mine from jack be natural (they're in north carolina i think?). i don't know about newborn sizing though because we started in disposables until DD became allergic to them. i will say prefolds are probably the easiest way to go at that point though
I bought a mixture of all brands of diapers when DS was a baby to try. I have since sold off all my diapers that aren't Bumgrnius. I love them!
I am going to use fitteds and covers for this next baby. I hated using prefolds. I couldn't get the hang of folding and using the snappi. I'm great at pinning on a fitted though :-)
our entire stash is BG elementals (the organic all in one diapers) and i LOVE them. for newborn stage (which definitely requires its own separate set of diapers) we used prefolds and covers. you can't go wrong with that system... it's tried and true for many many CDing families!
for the newborn stage, we used Green Mountain Diapers prefolds held together with a snappi and Thirsties and Bummis covers. one we got to 12ish pounds, we switched over to the one-size diapers.
BG 4.0s are very very popular, but i hated stuffing, and i hated the microfiber stink. the elementals work well for us.
