Two weeks ago I asked my MW if I'd be recieving another u/s to check on position, weight, fluid level, and umbilical issues... She said no, that she won't order another ultrasound unless she thinks something could be wrong.
My baby is very active. Was head down at 26 weeks but since then its flipped four times. Transverse, transverse the other way, head down, and then last week moved noticably again but I have no idea how its positioned now. Everything feels hard and I feel movement everywhere. Also, the whole pregnancy she has been worried I was not gaining enough weight. I'm very petite and was underweight before getting pregnant. She wanted me to gain between 35-40 lbs. Until a month ago I had only gained about 16. Two weeks ago I had gained four in two weeks and this appt I had gained another four in two weeks. Most of the time she says last time you weighed... so you've gained... but today she balanced the scale and immediatly reset it without saying anything and then just jumped to "Okay, lets see how your BP is doing." I've also been having a lot of lower back pain.
At the end of the appt she said that she wants to see if the baby is breech or not and is going to have me go in for another u/s. She called the hospital and got me in, today, at 5:30 pm Okay... just seems a bit odd to me and now I think I'm getting myself worked up.
Re: No reason to get myself all worked up... Right?
Try not to worry (currently trying to follow my own good advice) and assume the best. Generally, if they order another u/s they will tell you exactly why so that you won't worry...and I believe they have to give you a reason. She may want to do a growth scan, but if you are petite there is a good chance your baby may be as well. Sending T and P your way.
One thing I try to remember is that Doctors/Midwives are people too - they have a lot going on in their lives and that can affect their practice. It may be a situation where she had another mother have complications or insecurities about positioning and demanded an u/s, maybe someone was super rude to her about any weight gain comments and that could explain the change in behaviour. Chances are it isn't you, rather it is something that happened in her life/practice - you are just feeling the impact of it.
Not having context is really hard (had that myself) for things like an unexplained u/s - but the one thing I do know is that if something is seriously wrong they tell you. If they are just checking to be sure that things are good or something like that - half the time they forget to tell you because it's not urgent etc. It's almost as if they assume that we know it's not a big deal because they know it's a precaution and forget that we don't know/understand things the way they do.
Best of luck! Let us know how it turns out.
Agree with PPs...she may have had something else going on that distracted her from telling you what was going on with your weight/why she wanted the ultrasound. If you didn't gain or if you lost weight since your last appointment (or just didn't gain much), she may be trying to get in a growth scan. This is just to measure how the baby is growing, check fluid levels, etc. I lost 30 lbs in my first tri and have been on a cycle of gaining then losing weight ever since. My doc ordered a growth scan just to be sure the baby was growing well. (She is!!!) Your body typically funnels the nutrients to the baby first, and then you get what's left, so your baby is probably fine.
I wouldn't worry too much at this point. It sounds more like she's being careful than like she's got a major concern. Please let us know how it goes! GL!
