Thirsties covers

Do you like the duo wrap or just the regular cover for newborns?  Also for the duo wrap: snaps or aplix?  Thanks

Re: Thirsties covers

  • When LO was a newborn I liked the XS because it had a dip in the front to keep from rubbing on his cord. It is smaller than the size 1 duo. For newborn stage I preferred aplix but I did have two snap covers.

  • I actually like the Duos better.  I thought they seemed smaller than the XS on her.  My LO is really skinny with skinny legs.  For her, aplix/velcro all the way.  Nothing with snaps stays on.

  • I had both, and liked both. I liked that I could get an XS size for the beginning, but loved the Duos, especially when she was transitioning to OS diapers: the Duos fit well into that.

But aplix all the way. The only leaks I ever had with newborn poo in these was in my solitary snapped cover.

The aplix tends to curl up on you pretty quickly, but LO is not in them long enough to really matter, and, after 4 months of use, the covers are still useable for a second baby (if need be).

I bought both the XS and the duos, some with aplix and some with snaps.  I didn't have a strong preference between the XS or the duos, so we ended up going with more duos since we could use them longer.  DH and I both thought the aplix was much easier to fasten on a squirmy baby.  I didn't have any trouble with wear and tear, so they're washed and ready to be used any day now on baby #2.
  • I haven't tried the other styles of Thirsties wraps, but I used the Duo for my newborn as well as now she is a toddler.  It was fantastic, never a leak (apart from once due to my error).  I like the aplix because you can get a much better fit, with snaps you are limited to securing them where the actual snaps are, but with aplix you can fasten the diaper at any point around the entire waist.
  • I have both and so far I really like the regular covers so much better.  That might change when LO gets older though.  For the duo wraps I prefer the aplix.

  • I started out with the duos, but had to go out and buy the xs size because the duos were too big/wide.  The duo leaked for us until she was 5/6 weeks old, so we only used them as back-up.  I really hated the duos because the rise snaps were always coming undone.

Aplix is the way to go for NB diapers, getting a great fit with snaps can be hard plus you change them a gazillion times a day.  FWIW, my favorite NB cover is actually the bummis superbrite.

  • Duo with snaps for sure.
  • we only used the covers for the newborn and sub-4-month stage, and i only ever used the size 1 duos from the thirsties brand (as opposed to their true sized covers) so i can't really compare within that brand.  i loved the duos!  i had some XS bummis super whisper wraps too, which are sized covers, and i very much preferred the duos to the BSWWs.  i love the gussets and the thin material.  i also loved that i could use them through that awkward "too big for newborn, too small for one-size diapers" stage, right around 11-13 pounds.

for newborn, velcro wins hands down.  no contest.  bleary eyed middle of the night changes would be hell if you were fumbling with snaps.  for bigger kids, snaps are the way to go.  i feel very strongly about both!!  the newborn phase is short enough that you don't actually ruin your velcro during those few months, but you really appreciate the velcro's customized fit and the ease of attachment in that stage.  after that, though, you need the durability and strength of snaps to endure the toddler years, 'else you risk a perpetually naked kid greeting you at the bedroom door each morning!
