Preemies

Our preemie was born at 32 weeks!

My baby was born last week at 32 weeks! He was only 2 pounds 4.5 ounces at birth... he had early IUGR due to placental issues (velementous cord insertion). He's doing very well, but I'm sure I'm going to have a ton of questions as he continues in the NICU. It was a tough pregnancy, and part of me is glad that the stress of being so high risk is over with... although of course a preemie isn't ideal either. But they were worried he wouldn't make it at all, so we're very thankful!

Unfortunately, he does have an issue with his thumb. The thumb on his left hand is formed, however there's no bone attachment (there is a vein there so the thumb is getting a blood supply, but it's hanging by skin). The pediatric surgeon from the NICU was very "we'll just tie it and let it fall off". I was not happy how they handled this as they approached me (DH had run home for a minute, so I was alone) only 24 hours after my c-section when I was still on meds! Thankfully I was able to put them off by saying I wanted to discuss it with my husband before making any major decisions about our son. We have a little bandage on his hand now so that the thumb doesn't just "rub off" as they said might happen and we are seeking other opinions. In the grand scheme of things, his thumb is a minor issue as all his other parts are working as they should!

Nice to "meet" you all!

Re: Our preemie was born at 32 weeks!

  • Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry they didn't handle that gently! That's still upsetting news regardless of preemie or FT.

and yayy! on the birth of your son! Welcome to the preemie board - I'm sorry you wound up in our boat but we're a friendly group.

Several of the moms here made a blog - you'll find links in my siggy. There is one you might want to give to family and friends so they'll have ideas on how to help you on your journey.

Please update again soon - I'll be thinking of your family!

  • hello! my son was also born at 32 weeks. we were told when i found out i was pregnant with him we only had a 7% chance of carring him out of the first trimester so making it that far was such a blessing. being a premiee momma is hard but so rewarding at the same time. i would love to talk to you more and help you with support.

    good luck with everything!!

  • Welcome!  I am so terribly sorry the doctor didn't handle you with care.  How awful!  Sure, it might seem minor to the doctor, but they need to remember that people are dealing with seriously traumatic experiences!

Congratulations on the birth of your little man.  I had a 31weeker nearly 1 year ago.  It has been a wild ride, but incredible to look back on everything 1 year later.

Congratulations on your new baby boy! Welcome to the board! I have a 26 weeker who will finally be going home from the NICU this week after almost 12 weeks! Sorry to hear about your son's thumb.  I hope that you are able to get some other opinions that, at the very least, are delivered with more bedside manner than what happened to you!
