Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Waking at 4am for the day....

Hi there....

Just wondering if any of you have any advice for me....my little guy has been waking up between 4am and 4:30am every day for the past month.  He wont go back to sleep until his nap at 9:30am when he sleeps for two - three hours.   That's it until bedtime at 7pm.   Prior to this, he slept from 7pm to 6am every day.

I've tried putting him to bed earlier.  I've tried putting him to bed later.  I've tried feeding him more before bed.  I've tried letting him cry it out.

I would appreciate any feedback you can give me....I was under the assumption that once he hit twelve months, sleeping shouldn't be a problem.  As a new mother, though, I've learned not to assume anything anymore....jesus....

Thanks so much...

Re: Waking at 4am for the day....

  • Up until this past week--for months my daughter would wake up between 5:00-5:30am for the day. Same thing--she would take a nap around 9am-11am and that was it for the day until bedtime (6:30) Nothing was working. During the week it wasn't as big a problem, because we got up for work around then anyway--but on the weekends it was frustrating. There were a few 4:30am wake ups mixed in as well.

After months of that, this week she just started waking up between 6:00-6:30 for the day, which is MUCH nicer :)

  • My DS went through a phase like that too. I have NO clue what changed. I ended up playing around with everything until he started sleeping better. I ended up getting a bright night light and leaving his door open (I used to shut it). I honestly think it was just a random phase and he grew out of it.

C went through that too.  He just seemed to outgrow it.  It started just before he moved to one nap.  By 14 months he was solidly on one nap/day and once that transition was complete be began sleeping until 6:30-7.  Good Luck.

  • I don't have much advise but would love to see what other people say about this.  Our LO goes down at 7pm and has gets up around 5 where i bring her into bed to nurse and then she USED to fall asleep until 6 which worked for us.  For the past month she is rolling around and ready to play so I started letting her ccry until about 5:30 and then brought her to into bed.  During the period of CIO.. she would be in and out of sleep even if initially she was standing at the crib.  I told myself that I would let her cry until 6 but that hasn't felt right so for now it's 5:30 and as i said she is in and out of sleep.

    I need help too.

  • CIO longer. I had to let DS cry for 2 hours everyday for a week straight to break him of a 4:30 a.m. wake up right around that age.
