Suitable movies for little ones?

DS watched his first movie last night and seemed to enjoy it...we decided to have a pajama party and watch Shrek.  yeah...its so not appropriate in my mind (now that I've watched it with a little one!).  Embarrassed  I looked up the rating part way into the movie and it is PG...so that should have been my clue.

Anyways...mind sharing what movies your little one loves?

Re: Suitable movies for little ones?

  • Our current favorite is Brother Bear.  But any pixar movie is good and we have been through them all in phases.  My boys have seen all the Shreks.  I will alsp sneak in a princess movie now and again. Some they will watch some they wont (Beauty and the Beast gets watched).

  • Our girls are only 5 months old so I don't have any suggestions for you regarding suitable movies, but a couple years ago my wife and I went to see one of the saw movies and there was a couple who brought several young children and sat right up front. After seeing that Shrek doesn't seem so bad of a choice to me.

  • I hear you! We watched the Lion King with DS a few weeks ago (DH's idea) and I felt bad afterward -- it's a darker movie than I remember it being.

He loved the new Winnie the Pooh movie, nothing scary in there! And the Toy Story movies.

After 7 failed IUIs, IVF w/ ICSI worked!!

I am thankful every day for my miracle after infertility.

And thrilled to be pregnant again after FET!

  • DS is terrified of Shrek :) He likes Monsters Inc, Lady and the Tramp, and is obsessed with Cars. He also likes shorter movies like Chugington (trains).

  • We are digging on the Lion King right now...I fast forward through that whole Mufasa-dies-in-a-stampede part, but other than that, we love it.

No idea, but I'll be stalking for suggestions!  We've tried Nemo, Pirates Who Don't Do Anything (Veggie Tales), and the Little Mermaid and we get "It's too scary" so we haven't had much success yet.

Oh, we did watch Dispicable Me with them a while ago, but that must have been before everything was scary. :-)  They watched about an hour of it before they were bored and off doing other things.  That probably wasn't a terribly toddler appropriate one either.

  • You can always ffwd through bad parts! :)

Will has watched parts of Toy Story - he really likes that, even after just watching 30 minutes or so of it on the airplane, he recognizes and points out "BUZZ!" whenever he sees him. We just got him Finding Nemo for Easter and have watched it once because he is currently fish and turtle-obsessed. He likes that - even the "scary" parts are enjoyable to him, because he doesn't get that he should be scared of the sharks or the whale. :) I find that right now, he takes a lot of cues from us as to whether to be scared.

      holy crap...saw!?!  those poor kids!
  • FTR, I was more concerned about how many times they used "Damn" and "ass" in the movie..yes, they were technically referring to Donkey...but it was meant to be funny...  DS seemed to handle the "scary" parts really well...although he did jump when the dragon broke a stained glass window towards the end.

Thanks ladies!   I;ll have to give Toy Story a try...and I think he would adore Cars, given how obsessed he is with vehicles right now, but I'm kind of afraid to feed the obsession..ha!

  • DD LOVES shrek! I mean LOVES.

We like Lion King -- that was her first movie. We watched that over and over and over and over and over...you get the point.

    Currently it is Rio.

She also likes Cars and Dumbo and Tinkerbelle.

  • Andrew's first and still favourite movie was the original Cars movie. There was one scene that used to scare him -- when Frank the combine was chasing Lightning and Mater after they went tractor tipping -- but he LOVED it. He would get all tense about it but then ask to see it again.

I know what you mean about seeing movies through new eyes when you're watching with your little one. We thought Finding Nemo would be pretty innocent, but the beginning terrified him and he told us to turn it off. I love Monsters Inc. but am afraid to show him that lest it put the idea of monsters in his closet into his head.

Lately he's watched Rio, Lady and the Tramp, and Oliver and Company. (DH is a big Disney fan and has a big collection on DVD.)

  • At Jones' age Conor loved Cars and Toy Story.  He was (and still is) into Thomas the Train.  My mom got him a box set for x-mas one year.  Lucky me...

We also watch Finding Nemo, Lion King (he just got into it), Happy Feet, Up, and Jungle Book (he's not really into that one yet).

DH has an old Transformers movie (cartoon version) that they watch together.  It says sh*t in it - and it's rated PG!  We distract him when that scene comes up - and they only say it once.

  • Lion King and Rio are his favorites! DS loves, loves music, so thats partly why he likes them. I love Rio, especially the music.

  • my girls love Shrek- ha.

we pretty much watch anything Disney- Finding Nemo is an all time fav (& yes, they watch the part where Nemo's mom gets eaten) as is Bambi (another yes to watching Bambi lose his mom)

non Disney- lots of Veggie Tales & Despicable Me.

    they love everything!

  • The new Muppets movie is a HUGE hit in our house -- even Dave and I enjoy it.  :)

The girls love all things Disney.  Which movies are too scary literally varies by the day.  They consistently love Beauty and the Beast (even though it is scary-ish) and Monsters Inc. (they never find that one scary -- strange!).   They love Mary Poppins, the Toy Story movies, the Curious George movie is a big hit, too.

  • Almost any Disney movie - even the scarier stuff he doesn't really get or has seen it often enough it doesn't bother him (the first time he saw Lion King he was somewhat agitated during the stampede scene but he watches it fine now, doesn't blink at Nemo even though he didn't like the sharks at the Nemo ride at Disney, etc.).

His very favorites are all the Toy Story movies, Lion King, Nemo, Monsters, Inc., Dumbo (which is far more upsetting to me than Shrek/Lion King/etc.), both Madagascars and lately he wants to watch the Grinch and Frosty the Snowman all the time!

    *** It's funny because I'm fat ***
  • DS loves Cars.  He will watch it anytime.  We'll let him watch 15 or 20 min here and there.  It's the only movie he really likes to watch.  We have Cars 2 also but it's nowhere near as good as Cars the original.  (Cars has some good adult humor sprinkled in and good music, too!)

  • Wow I'm jealous of those of you whose kids actually watch movies.  Nicholas has yet to watch one.   I've tried Cars, All the Toy Story movies, and a few others.   he just will not pay attention for more than 2 minutes.  Of course he can sit and watch Blues Clues for hours. He needs to broaden his horizons.

I bet Ava watches her first movie before Nicholas does.

  • Miles loves Cars, Toy Story, Beauty & the Beast, Veggie Tales (although the strong Christian stuff gets on my nerves sometimes), and he LOVED The Lorax.  I suggest you stay away from Pinnichio.  I remembered all the good in that movie.  I ignored the kids drinking, smoking cigars, and being abducted and held against their will by a creepy guy turning them into donkeys.  Yeah.  Scary movie!

  • I didn't read all of the responses but I thought I would tell you what DS loves.

At 17 months old we took DS to see his first movie in the theater, it was the new Winnie the Pooh.  He actually sat for the entire thing and loved it.  We also had the theater to ourselves since we went on a Monday morning at 11:40.

He loves Cars, Rio, and Cars 2.  Cars use to be his favorite but we have watched Rio more times and he actually laughs more at Rio especially at Will I Am's character. He watches Toy Story and Toy Story 2, we've seen the 3rd one but he doesn't seem to like it as much, Finding Nemo, Wall-E, Monsters, Inc, the old Winnie the Pooh, Piglet's BIG movie, the Tigger one and a few Thomas and Chuck and Friends.

  • DD is just over 3 and her favorite movies are The Nightmare Before Christmas, Star Wars, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

She loves princess movies and whatnot, but I guess I'm in the minority. She's not scared of any of these things, and if I don't make them seem scary and just accept them, she won't have a reason to fear them. She's one tough cookie!
