Cloth Diapering

help!

hello ladies,

I need help with my washing routine. I have an LG Front Loader washing machine with very hard water.  Heres My routine.

First Rinse and Spin with no spin. Warm/cold water. That is the only temp it will allow me to choose. Then I do a regular wash with Hot/cold water, and 2 extra rinses. I have an option of adding another rinse, but i'm trying not to use a ton of water.

I have tried a few different detergents Charlie's Soap, Rock'n Greene(for hard water), Allens Natural, and Crunchy Clean(for hard water). Should i have stripped my dipes before switching detergents?

My Diapers still have a funky smell to them. i'm getting very frustrated! I love using cloth, but the smell thing is driving me crazy!

TIA!

diapers need A LOT of water, so trying not to use a ton just doens't work.

You probably have a lot of detergent build up. I have a Frigidaire FL and I use a heavy wash on warm/warm for the initial rinsing.  I add enough water to the "wash" portion of the cycle to immerse the diapers.  I then do a hot/cold heavy wash with detergent, again adding enough water in the "wash" cycle to immerse the diapers.  I also add an extra rinse.  If I still have suds, I do another wash.

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

  • Thanks for the help! I should've said I use the heavy Soil option for washing the diapers. I will add another rinse, and see if that helps!

Any Tips on how to get my FL to use the most water? i'm totally lost on this.

  • Try adding a bucket of water to the front loader during the wash cycle. Or, you can try adding a sopping wet towel (it adds water and tricks the machine into thinking the load is huge and needs more water too).

I've had two types of funkiness-- the first was ammonia. I added vinegar in the bleach/fabric softener dispenser and an extra rinse. The second was barnyard, that was fixed by using more detergent (my regular amount for clothes instead of half the amount).

It sounds like our wash routines are similar, but I'm not sure what type of water I have (it's not super soft...). Definitely add an extra rinse/spin cycle at the end and see if that helps.

  • Thanks! I will try both those! the smell is faint, but once the kids pee it's much stronger. my dipes are currently soaking in hot water and crunchy clean. crunchy cleans site recommends soaking before using their dtergent for the first tim. sorry for any typos. i'm nursing my little guy :)
