3.5 mo old: eating less, very fussy

DS is 3.5 months old & over the last week he's had some very fussy nights, at these times he's also eating less.

For example: Yesterday he nursed for 50 minutes total, normally he nurses for 75-90 minutes per day. Last night he screamed from 9:30-10:30 before finally falling asleep. He wouldn't nurse & had a clean diaper. We tried everything we could think of singing, walking, rocking, bouncing, bicycling legs, etc. He woke up at 4:30, I assumed he was hungry & tried to nurse, he screamed. After 40 minutes he calmed down & nursed for 6 minutes.

Normally he nurses with no problems. On his fussy days he might latch for 0-2 minutes before screaming.  Any idea what might be going on? The only thing we could think of was some sort of tummy ache, maybe gas or constipation...? We did give him gripe water, which seemed to help.

(I am going to check out kellymom, but the site is down?)

  • A few more things:

His temp was normal. We thought maybe he was starting to teethe, but we can't feel anything.

My first thought was teething. Our dd popped her first 2 by 4 months and they bothered her a lot at night. We never noticed a fever but tylenol became our savior. If gripe water helped it could be gas or some tummy trouble. Maybe try tylenol for a night and see if it works? Then u might be able to rule out teething.

  • Sounds like teething to me too!  Neither of my first 2 ever had a fever with teething until the day they popped through. When my DS was teething he did the same thing - nursed for a minute or two then pulled off screaming.

I agree with trying a little tylenol if it happens again and see if that helps.

  • If gripe water helped, it might have been gas. My DD will not eat or latch if she has a gas bubble and will just scream until we can work it out. Although, it's entirely possible it's teething too.
