Cloth Diapering

One thing I HATE about cloth diapers . . .

My 18-month-old has been in cloth diapers since she was born, and we wouldn't do it any other way. I love our cute, eco-friendly, durable, going-to-be-hand-me-down cloth diapers, but one thing makes me want to scream:

Every time I find a diaper I like, it is guaranteed to be discontinued or radically altered within 6 months. I'm looking at you, Thirsties. And bumGenius.

Our daycare accepts cloth diapers, but we want to keep things as simple as possible for them, so we send bumGenius 3.0 AIO (sized, w/ aplix) and save all the cute fitteds for home use. Last week, I decided I wanted to add a few more to the school stash. I knew that those particular diapers had been discontinued, so I went to my friendly local diaper store to ask what the differences were between the old 3.0 AIOs and the new, redesigned one-size AIOs. The saleslady looked at me like I was asking about a lost civilization and said, "I really don't know ? those must have been before my time."

My daughter is 18 months old. I bought my old diapers at this same store a year ago, not 15 years ago. And yet, it was as if I had used some sort of time travel device to ask about a long-forgotten technology. This isn't the first time my favorite diaper has been discontinued ? I've become a pro at scouring the swap sites for diapers that were readily available just a month or two prior.

So, let this be a warning to new cloth diaperers: if you find a diaper you really love, stock up (after you've used it a while and know it's what you want). There's a good chance it won't be available later.

  • I am right there with you.  I've been trying to hunt used sized BG 3.0s for baby #2.  I have some left over from DS, but not enough to send to day care since DS was home with a nanny.  I am also having the same issue with inserts. My favorites were AFFF and the sized blueberry bamboo, which are no longer available.

My sister is selling 10 small BG AIOs if you are interested. They are in really great shape. Email me and I can get you in touch with her. She isn't a bumpie.
