Natural Birth

Non-water home birth question

Most home birth stories seem to involve a birthing tub, but what if you don't want a water birth? Do you just get waterproof pads/tarps for the bed? I never thought I'd consider a home birth, but this last time it was really annoying to have to get in the car and go in just in time to push - I had no time to settle in or center in my hypno stuff after a jarring car ride and I found myself kind of wishing I hadn't had to go anywhere.

Re: Non-water home birth question

  • chux pads and I put something waterproof under the sheets (that were only for the birth), also we had some thin plastic to put over carpet if we needed it as well

We had a birthing tub but as you know this time I didn't really use it

  • I wasn't sure where I was going to birth (I ended up in the tub). We set up our living room as the birth room, and it had the birth tub, my son's single mattress with a waterproof cover on it and old sheets, and some stools. We were set up for a few possibilities.

  • My mw has told me to have waterproof pads on the bed and from the bedroom to the bathroom as well to protect the floors, a good idea is to make your bed with good sheets, put a waterproof cover over them, make your bed with the sheets you don't mind ruining so after baby comes you can just remove the old sheets and cover and you don't have to make your bed :)

  • I am planning a HB for LO2 but I have no desire for a water birth. My MW said they just put down chux pads wherever you happen to end up.
