HELP! Allergic to Amoxycillin? Anyone's baby...

Anyone's baby allergic to amoxycillin?  DS has a small ear infection and Dr. prescribed amoxycillin to take care of it.  Gave first dose yesterday afternoon and all was fine.  Brought him home for daycare, and he threw up on the car, and pink since the med is pink.  Then gave him his 2nd dose of the day and fed him.. going well until mid bottle:  puked all over me.   3 hours later time for bed and figured I'd try to get in his bedtime bottle... not more than 4 or 5 sucks in, he throws it all up.  Now he is asleep in his crib, and not food in his tummy.  I called the emerg. dr. but no answer back.  what should I do in the meantime???

  • My son is allergic to it and I don't think vomiting is one of the symptoms. He would get severe hives and welts. Amoxicillin does upset their stomach so I think that's just what's going on. You should expect pretty bad diarrhea too.

  • That is not an allergic reaction, it's one of the side effects however don't give him another does. You need to speak to the on call Dr. One of the things to look for when on That RX is persistent vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping. If h was having an allergic reaction hives would be present, also itching and swelling. The reaction your son is having is just as serious so don't give him anything further. Make sure to speak to the Dr ASAP, you don't want him to become dehydrated from the vomiting. Good luck!

  • Thanks!  Yes, I read that it was a side effect, but wow!  I am still waiting on the dr. to call me back... it's already been an hour and a half...  I will not give him anymore of that medication until I talk to the doctor.  Thanks again ladies!
  • My son is allergic to it.  He didn't throw up.  He just got really bad hives.  He took benedryl until the hives went away.  And they switched him to a different medicine. I can't remember the name of what they switched him too, but he actually loved it.  Must have tasted much better than the Amox.

And the doc should call you back before that!  You may want to think about a new doc.

  • Amoxycillin gave one of my DDs hives (took her off and used benedryl). The stronger version, Augmentin, REALLY upset the other DDs stomach - she spit up 1-2 bottles/day and had a lot of loose stools. I finally called the pedi after 3 days and we just took her off of it.
  • DD was allergic as well.  (hives).  Dr. gave her Cefdenir and she loves that much better than the Amoxicillin/Augmentin.  She is still on it and has a few more days to go.

  • We just got over a really bad case of the hives and a high fever from amoxycillin!! My little guy took it a couple months ago and was fine, he took if for a week this second time and with only 2 doses left in the treatment he had a delayed reaction.

With any antibotics we give with food and feed him lots of yogurt and bananas and apples to help out with the loose stools.
