Umbilical cord stump fell off but, still bleeding?

DD's stump fell off a few nights ago and it is bleeding a tiny little bit. Just enough to make a scab.

There isn't an odor, pus, or discoloration coming out. Just some scabbing from the dried blood. When I clean it, the belly button looks completely normal and the next morning she wakes up with a scab. There has never been enough bleeding to get on a diaper or a onesie.

I've read some things online saying it's normal but, I wanted to see if anyone here had experienced the same thing.

  • My DD had the same issue. I called the doctor and they said to keep it clean, wash it with warm soapy water, and to call if there is a lot of blood, pus or odor. Fortunately, it went away on its own in a few days. :)

  • I would just wash with warm soapy water and keep it dry until the scab comes off.  My LO lost her stump prematurely on day 5....it had detached along the edge and was very oozey, bloody, and smelly.  Pedi said that hers looked fine and I was terrified it was infected.  They definately look pretty nasty when they come off.  Once her stump was off and it scabbed over, I waited another week before finally picking the scab off.  To my surprise the scab was just stuck in her belly button and the skin under was completely healed.  It looked like a lonely little raisen in her belly button.  ICK!

  • Same with my LO but it is all better now (:
  • My LO's did the same thing.  His fell off after one week, but still had some dark red oozing and crustiness.  I just used a mild soap and water mixture and dipped a Q-tip in it and wiped around the inside of his belly button to clean it.  It would also be clean, and then dirty the next day, but it stopped doing that after about 3 days I would say.  I also put a little bit of neosporin over the belly button to keep the moisture out and help it heal.
