Any cyclists here?

First off - I'm a casual, fair-weather cyclist.  I live in MA so I have only rode my bike 3 times this season.  Now that the weather is getting nicer, I hope to ride more in the coming months.

I've asked my OB and she said it's okay to ride until I'm 16-20 weeks; by that point, it'll probably be too uncomfortable for me.  Also, she said my balance gets off by then and I'm at risk for falling.

I'm 12 weeks this week, which means that I will have perhaps 1-2 months to ride.  Obviously, I'll stop riding as soon as I feel uncomfortable (or when my bike shorts get too tight)!  But I'm curious to hear about your personal experience!

If you rode your bike during your pg,

1) How far along were you when you stopped biking, and

2) What was the reason behind your stopping?

TIA!

Re: Any cyclists here?

  • With my 1st pregnancy, I rode my bike a couple times a week (also was running) until about 20-ish weeks. I started out on my road bike, then when that got uncomfortable, I switched to my mountain bike (heavier, but more upright position). I only rode on bike paths. Didn't trust myself riding with traffic, but that's just what made me comfortable. About my last week or two before stopping, I was riding indoors on the trainer (on the mtb). Basically, I stopped when it just didn't feel right anymore. For this pregnancy, I haven't been biking at all, just focusing on running and a little yoga. Once the weather warms up, if I am feeling like it, maybe I'll bring the bike out -- likely the mtb. Good luck to you!

  • I never rode my bike on the road while I was pregnant.  I am an avid cyclist, too (raced elite level in triathlon and road raced on a Cat1/pro womens team).  The risks outweighed the benefits.  There are a lot of circumstance out of your control when you are out riding on the road.  A fork could break, a car could run you off the road, you could wash out on gravel, etc.  I stuck to running, swimming and riding my bike inside on a trainer.

  • I was actually hit by a truck once on my bicycle, so when I was PG last time, I never felt comfortable riding anything that wasn't stationary. I did spinning classes 2-3x/week until sometime in week 38, I think. I delivered at 39.5 weeks. I didn't hop around on the saddle during the last weeks, and I didn't get down into 3rd position.

Last year, I got minimal saddle time due to no gym membership and the struggle of coordinating babysitting (and LO not being big enough for a bike seat). This year, I'm pregnant again, but I've moved and now I have some bike paths closer to me... I live in Southeast MA (not NH like my avatar says), btw... and I go riding with LO in her bike seat. I have gone up to 17 miles with her on the CCRT. She's my buddy!

If you live nearby.... wanna PM me your email? I'm looking for a riding buddy! :-)
