EBF mamas

Does your doctor use the growth chart/percentiles for EBF babies or the standard one?  Just curious.  When we posted awhile back about percentiles and height/weight, I was noticing some differences.

Re: EBF mamas

  • I am pretty sure it is a standard one, because he always asks how he is fed after he tells us his stats.

  • I think they use the standard one but I am not sure. DD hasn't had her 4 month visit yet.

  • The WHO growth chart is what your doc should be using for BF babies- it is pretty standard. The CDC growth chart is distributed by formula companies, and while free (to the office), they often times gauge BF babies underweight when they are not.

Yeah, my doctor uses the WHO one.

  • I have no idea. One of the questions they ask before taking any measurements, they ask if she is still EBF.

  • I have no idea, so I'm going to ask at E's appt later this morning.  I think they probably use the WHO chart, given that they are pro-breastfeeding with everything else.

ETA: Pedi uses the WHO chart, but they just switched about 6 months ago.  I did see an 'enfamil' logo on the chart, so the formula companies are still involved somehow!

  • I'm honestly not sure. He is very pro-breastfeeding, so I'd be surprised if it wasn't the WHO chart.

  • I remember someone commented on the differences (probably the same post) and I figured the different charts were what accounted for it.  Not that I know which chart DS's pedi uses.  I'm thinking maybe the standard one since his length percentile is significantly higher than his weight percentile, and I assume his percentiles would be closer on the WHO chart because EBF babies tend to be leaner, if that makes sense.  As long his doctor's happy with his growth, I don't know that it matters, but now I'm curious and I'll try to remember to ask at his 6 month appointment.
