If you're kids are/were in daycare, please come in

Just wondering how often they are sick (on average).  Even just with a simply runny nose and cough.  I am having second thoughts about putting DD's in daycare because one of my daughters simply does not eat when she is sick.

Thanks

  • they will likely be sick a lot the first year.

my older son was sick a lot the first year- then was fine after that and rarely gets sick... he was full time.

my twins have only been going 2 days a week since 5mo old- and i swear they are taking so much longer to build up immunity b/c they are part time - they have been sick a lot more than DS1 was - but it's starting to slow down now (knock on wood).

your daughter will do things totally different at daycare than she will at home- so don't stress about something you THINK she'll do or won't do....

  • We didn't put my son in until 17 months old.  He's been sick constantly ever since.  He only goes 2 days a week.  He is sick about every two weeks, for a couple of days at least.  And he seems to have a perpetual cough that won't go away (he's just over 2).  I couldn't do it without my mother in law, who watches him when he is sick.  Daycare can be so frustrating, because you put your child in there so that you can work, and you wind up not being able to work (unless you have an awesome back up situation like my mother in law) so often because of sickness.

One reason I'm super excited to have an excuse to have a nanny.

  • Oh, runny nose and cough = pretty much non stop.

A worse cold or temperature (he even got the flu with a flu shot) = about every two weeks.  The lastest most awesome sickness was hands foot and mouth, which went around the day care.

  • DD was sick a lot in daycare but, knock on wood, has done great with school.  Her cousin who never went to daycare has missed a lot of school this year (kindergarten).  That said I am not planning for my twins to go to daycare, maybe half day preschool in a few years, but I am trying to avoid the expense of daycare for two.

  • My daughter was on daycare from three months to almost two and only got sick a couple times. She very rarely gets sick and seems to have a really strong immune system now!

  • My girls get sick here and there.  They catch whatever is going around the daycare, but I did notice they were healthier this year as compared to when they first started.  My older DD has been in daycare since she was 3 months and rarely gets sick now, even with the twins sharing things with her.  So obviously she has built up some immunities.

DDs have been in daycare since they were 3 months old.  They have had a bunch of colds, but surprisingly, we've haven't had nearly as many episodes of stuff that has kept them out of daycare as I would have expected.  I've only had a couple of sick ped visits too.  DDs have never been on antibiotics either (unless you count what one DD was on in the NICU the day she was born for a potential infection).  Knock on wood, of course. :-)

  • Our kids started daycare at 5 months last January, right in the thick of winter virus season. For the first few months they were sick off and on, with at least 1-2 ear infections each and a minor bout of RSV for DD. Once the weather warmed up they got better and haven't been seriously sick since. This winter they each had a few colds that made us keep the NoseFrida handy, but other than 1 ear infection that kept DD out for 2 days they were never sick enough to miss school. So their immune systems seem to have improved.

  • Mine started at 9 months and have been sick at least 50% of the time since. That is a very conservative estimate though - I started bringing them to daycare because their chronic ear infections started at 6 months and we get so little sleep, so little evening time to ourselves to get anything done, that I needed a way to catch up on laundry, cleaning, sleep, and sanity. Their ear infections have also continued, so if I were to attribute those to daycare too, they are sick 90% of the time.

  • My girls were sick quite a bit the first winter they were in daycare.  After that, it's been a breeze.  They had a few colds last year, and this year Caden got strep once.  Minor colds, but nothing that even interrupted their sleep.

  • My girls started DC last October at 6 months, and had runny noses more often than not all winter long.  They also got a lot/couldn't get rid of ear infections.  Other than that, they had random fevers a couple times, but didn't get anything serious.
  • My boys started DC at 15 months old around 11/11.  They pretty much have been sick all winter with colds, runny noses and ear infections.  I hear the first year is the worst.  They are finally starting to feel a little better where they are starting to be outside a lot more.

  • During the winter they had a cold every 2-3 weeks. They both also had RSV.

Honestly, my friends who are SAHM but bring their kids out in public have sick kids just as often. I think the only way to avoid it is to SAH and don't go out in public.
