Babies: 0 - 3 Months

what if baby doesn't burp?

My baby is 11 days old and it takes so long to get him to burp after he eats. Sometimes he WON'T burp and just falls asleep. Sometimes this makes him have the hiccups and then hardly ever it will make him spit up.

Does your baby HAVE to burp after he eats? I burp him every 3-5 minutes during feedings but sometimes after he's done, he just won't burp again.

Re: what if baby doesn't burp?

  • Some babies, like my DD, are hard to burp.  DD get's very fussy when she doesn't burp, but it takes about an hour for that to occur.  Sometimes I still can't burp her and she'll fall asleep so I just have to give her some gas drops or gripe water when she wakes up.  Have you tried different burping positions?  Try lying him tummy down across your lap and burp.  I have to sit DD in my lap and rock her back and forth (make her lay down flat, then sit up, repeat) and then burp her and repeat that process until she burps...sometimes this makes her spit up a bit, but that's usually just the air bubble forcing some milk up.  If the hiccups are uncomfortable for him, try gripe water...it stops them immediately for DD.

  • Where do you buy these "gas drops" and gripe water???
  • I bought mine at walmart...it's the little tummies brand (in my store, they're next to the baby formula).

is it ok to give to her after she eats before she probably sleeps?

  • I've tried doing it both ways and, for me, it's best to do before feedings because DD falls asleep right after and I hate to make her fussy and wake her.  But it's fine to do either way.  It's also fine to use at EVERY feeding...my pedi says use them as often as you need to...you can't overdose on gas drops.  Gripe water says not to use more than 6 times in a 24 hour period I think but I only use it for hiccups since it doesn't work for my DD for anything else but it may work for other stuff for your LO so try it.  It's all natural too.

  • I asked the Dr. this and he said not all babies burp, but that doesn't help when its a feeding at night and she doesn't burp and i fear her spitting up and choking....

  • I don't know if your LO is formula or breast fed....I EBF and I never burp my LO. I asked in the hospital and was told it was not as big an issue with bf babies. My pedi said the same thing...unless they are showing discomfort, it's okay. My LO passes gas A LOT!!  It all seems to come out the one end!!

this... I EBF as well and my baby hardly ever burps and very rarely spits up. She passes gas often and I am not that concerned about getting a burp. I try to burp her for a minute or two and if it doesn't work I just stop.

  • I ebf, and for the first 2 weeks lo had a hard time burping. We actually had some reflux issues. After awhile though, starting at 4 weeks, lo would burp within 20 seconds of burping. I wonder if for her, she just needed her system to mature a bit because I certainly wasn't doing anything different.

  • I breastfeed and bottle feed for now. I'm actually thinking about formula feeding most of the time...He would spit up the Enfamil I got, but not the Similac. So I think I'll stick with the Similac and I am pretty sure he likes it (: Some people just weren't cut out to breastfeed!
  • I try to get DD to burp every 1-2.5 oz but sometimes it just doesn't happen, especially toward the end of her feeding.  She usually doesn't spit up, but if she does no big deal, I just clean it up.  It's never a lot!
