Cloth Diapering

Motor Development Question

I have a 4 month old chunky monkey who has been wearing BG 4.0's since he was 3 weeks old.  They're so bulky I'm concerned about it effecting his gross motor development.  Every time I take his diaper off his feet go up in the air and his knees shoot up to his chest.  He never keeps his legs in the air much when he has CD's on.  Not to mention the diapers seem to keep his legs so far apart...He's also not trying to roll yet (Dr's not concerned since he's practically sitting up and he's over 17lbs).

Could this be due to the bulk of his diapers?  We're really enjoying the bg 4.0s in all other respects and I really don't want to buy a whole new set of smaller, less bulky diapers.  Should we consider sposies until he's a little bigger?  Tell me I'm just being a paranoid mama and that cd's aren't actually slowing his physical development.

Anyone else deal with this?

Re: Motor Development Question

  • All Babies develop at different rates. Cloth diapers never slowed us down and we are prefolds/covers family which is definitely one of the bulkier options.  Instead of buying new diapers if you are concerned about bulk give LO some diaper free time on an absorbent pad or prefold to catch any accidents. This is what we did before LO was mobile and it was good to have the extra air movement and remain rash free.  He did learn to roll over first when he was diaper less but within days he would do the same when wearing his diaper.

  • We let LO have naked time after her bath every night. She was able to roll naked first, but in a few days, she was able to do it with her diaper and clothing on. I wouldn't worry about it. Before sposies, everyone wore CDs, and they all ended up rolling/sitting/crawling/walking.

  • Like PP mentioned all babies develop in their own time. DD's development has never been slowed down bc she's in cloth. She learned how to to everything on time and in cloth with her big fluffy butt!

  • I do see a difference with mobility when it comes to BG's. DD is able to move much better during her diaper free time and when she is in other diapers (WAHM and Charlie Bananas).

  • DD's feet and legs always shot in the air during diaper changes like you're describing when she was a few months old.  It's just a reflex for some babies.  She doesn't do it anymore and she's developing just fine.  We primarily use BG diapers.

  • DS has been in CDs since birth and rolled on average, crawled on average, and is already walking most of the time. He hasn't been slowed down. He was also born bow legged from being too big and squished and I was afraid that the wider crotch would affect that but his legs are officially on the normal scale as of last month.

  • Sometimes I wish the CDs would slow him down, lol.

Nope, no problems. Moving along right on schedule. :)

  • My nephew who is in disposables just started rolling. He's 5 months and weighs just 15lbs. The doctor isn't concerned that he's behind. I'm not worried about my little guy in cloth. Every child develops skills at a different rate.
