Cloth Diapering

Smell ?

I've been trying to educate my mother in the changes in CD since I was a baby. Having no first hand experience myself as a FTM, some of her questions/concerns are hard to answer.

Today she was concerned about the smell of dirty diapers. I told her that you don't soak diapers anymore & you don't need to swish them in the toilet. She didn't understand how they wouldn't smell.

Does anyone have an easy answer?

Re: Smell ?

  • It just doesn't. If you wash them every couple of days, it's fine.

Does she live in your house? Why is she this involved in the decision? My  mom doesn't really care because she's not the one changing the diapers every couple hours.

  • Ha, no she doesn't live with us. In fact, she's in another state & my decision wouldn't really affect her at all. She's just curious & realizes CD are different now.

Maybe I worded my initial question funny. I'm just looking for an easy response for those older folks who side eye or question my choice to CD.

I realize I don't need to defend myself. I would just like to be able to answer these questions if someone asks.

  • The answer is the combination of a wetbag (or trashcan with a lid) and washing every couple days.  Disposables sit in a trashcan until it's full enough to take out, but you wash CD before they get too incredibly stinky.  Diapers will stink regardless of whether you use disposable or cloth, but you can use similar products for cloth diapers to contain the smell if you want.  In fact, you can spray bac-out on cloth to help with the smell if it bothers you.  It's a waste to do so with disposables though.
