3rd Trimester

trace amts of protein....

so what exactly does this mean aside from the obvious? ?i had my 38w appt today and for the first time there are trace amts of protein in my urine. ?i kind of expected this would be the case as the swelling in my feet has slowly moved up to my shins. ?my blood pressure was fine (don't know the exact reading). ?the doctor said they'd be more concerned if the protein came back at +1.... but what does all of this mean? ?

i think i was a bit in shock so i couldn't think of any questions... and since she didn't seem too concerned i really wasn't either... ?

Re: trace amts of protein....

  • Signs of pre-eclampsia. I had +2 two weeks ago and had to do the 24 hour urine test. Last week I just had trace. You need to watch for headaches that don't go away, severe swelling (other than hands and feet) and pains on your right side (liver). I had the same thing in my 1st pg. and had to do the 24 hr. test and DD was born before results came back and that was at 38 weeks. I would not worry unless your Dr. is.

  • My OB said it's 'normal' to have a small amount spill over into your urine toward the end of the pregnancy, but unless it was +1 they weren't too concerned or would require extra testing. The little strips they dip into your urine change color and show them what the concentration is so you must have just a little tiny bit if it didn't change to a #1 level.

But, I believe you can also have protein in your urine if you are dehydrated. Have you been drinking less lately?

  • ahhh I'm an expert at this now! If you're +1 then there's a greater chance you may have pre-e so they do the 24 hour urine collection. After the collection you find out if you've got it or not. It's ok to have some in your urine though.
  • i've definitely been drinking plenty of water. ?the swelling has just not gone away, and become increasingly worse, since 34w. ?i'll definitely keep an eye on facial swelling, headaches and any pain in the right side... although that's where the dude's tushy is lodged... so sometimes it's hard to tell if there's pain or just a tush bulging out... lol.
  • Well I really hope that everything turns out ok for you. I wouldn't wish the day I've had on anyone.
  • You will be just fine... Don't worry about it!?
  • Cajun is right.....I have a 24 hr urine every two weeks. An the last one landed my butt in the hospital as it was +3 for protein. My doctor told me to try and intake two 44 oz cups of water a day if not more. He said that sometimes you can flush your system of these proteins and that it actually help get all the toxic stuff outta your system. I am sure that if there was a concern your doctor would have told you. They will probably just keep an eye on it. Good Luck!!!
  • I had trace, then after a 24 hr collection- It was still just a trace. Then 2 days later I was back in L&D, another 24 hr collection, it was up to 500, 2 days after I was admitted to the hospital, it was then over 2000.

Bp just got higher and higher, swelling got worse and worse and never ever went down.

It can change very very quickly. Keep an eye out if you get severe headaches, vision changes, stomach pain.

You know your body best, be proactive.

    Hang in there! =)

thanks... i'm sure it will be fine, just wanted to check on here. ?i just read about your day... i'm so sorry. ?i would feel violated too.?

  • I had that at my last appt.  Doc wasn't really concerned because I don't have any other symptoms of Pre-E (no swelling, BP is fine, etc.).  I had also had a quick bout of food poisoning so he suspected I was dehydrated from that.

My doc just told me to call if I had any other symptoms or concerns and drink tons of water.

Scary though, that was the first "negative" test result I have had with either pregnancy (other than I guess with DD I was slightly anemic at the end).
