Frozen Sperm

Are there any lurkers {ticker warning} on this board who have had experience with frozen sperm? My husband work schedule doesn't ways fit for obtaining fresh sperm for IUI.

Any comments or suggestions on frozen sperm would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Frozen Sperm

  • I'm lurking around. My wife and I have to use DS which is frozen because of my infertility issues. What are your specific questions?

First off thank you for stopping by.  I know these are questions I can ask my RE, but I will like to hear others experience :-)

    1) Can vitals/sample be double when doing the IUI

    2) What's the average percentage/rate of sperm that die

    3) How long does frozen sperm live after post wash...ie number of days/hrs

Also, I do plan to ask our RE about accommodation for insemination since my husband has to be at work at 6 am and sample are to be delivered at 7:30

    Again thanks :-)

  • 1. I've never heard of them doubling up on an IUI. Two IUIs a day or two apart, yes. Remember if your husband is giving the sample he won't have the best swimmers back to back like that. I would talk to your RE if you think you'd like to do this as you might need to do a frozen and then a fresh IUI.

    2. I haven't a clue. Sorry. But based on what I know my understanding is that there aren't many sperm left to fertilize the egg for normal reproduction. Remember though, that for an IUI the sample is washed which gets rid of all the trouble makers, a solution will be mixed with the sperm to help them out some and that the sperm are dropped off at the top of the uterus vs the cervix during normal reproduction. This takes out a lot of the journey for the sperm so more are "suppose" to be left over to fertilize your egg.

    3. I think the average is about 36hours to 48hours, but it can be more or less depending on the environment.  When doing in IUI they aim to have the sperm in the tubes waiting for the egg BEFORE you ovulate. This is the best time. The doctor has the option of giving you a trigger shot. It takes about 36 hours for the egg to drop after the trigger so you'd likely do your IUI about 24hrs after the trigger.

I'm pretty sure the time frame you mentioned between your husband's appointment and yours in a normal time frame actually. Normally, you'll go in about an hour after he gives the sample for a fresh iui instead of worrying about them freezing anything. I would talk to your RE about the hour your DH needs to be a work and what time your appointment should be for that reason.

An iui is a walk in the park. Hoping it works out well for you two!

  • I have been using frozen sperm, and on IUI #2, the RE ended up using two vials. Both had low counts and it was the best option at that point so as to not skip that cycle altogether.
