DD won't sleep!

DD has been crying for most of the day. It started last evening, around 6:30. We finally got her to go to bed. She slept for a few hours, ate, slept another few hours and has been up since 8 a.m. or so. She's only taken 1 nap today, which lasted nearly 2 hours. If she's not on the breast, she's crying. It seems she is mostly comfort sucking. And she seemed to have had her 3-week growth spurt feeding marathon last weekend.

We've tried swaddling, rocking, walking, changing, burping, everything we can think of. She just won't settle down and it seems she is fighting sleep. We're sure she must be overtired.

(Despite what my ticker says, she is 4 weeks and 2 days old.)

Any ideas/suggestions?

  • Have you tried to wear her in a sling or carrier?  Lots of moms on this board swear by it to put their LO to sleep.  I personally haven't needed to go this route, but it seems rather successful for those who do use it.

When my DS is overtired (especially in the evenings), a warm bath tends to calm him down enough (he even smiles in the tub!) so that he will willingly go to sleep without too much of a fight.

I have not tried the carrier. Why didn't I think of that? I have a Moby, so maybe I will try that next. Right now she's swaddled in her crib with the Sleep Sheep on -- she started to fall asleep and woke right back up. Crying again. Hopefully the Moby will help.

  • At that age, it doesn't sound all that unusual.  It may not be what you want to hear, but I suggest feeding her whenever she gives hunger cues.  If she's acting more tired than hungry, you can try the 5 S's (swaddle, side laying, swaying, shhing, and sucking) to calm her down.  If she's still upset, try bicycling her legs for a couple minutes to see if it's gas.  At this age though, you may just need to let her comfort suck to get to sleep.  Nature gave you a natural pacifier, so I personally see no problem in using it to calm my baby.

    Best of luck to you!
