Can I join you ladies?

Hello Ladies, I just found out about a week and a half ago that we are expecting twins! I should proabaly mention this is our first pregnancy. We were definitely shocked when the u/s tech (I was 10w1d) pointed out 2 babies on the screen. I knew it was a possibility since I have twins on my mom's side of the family but I didn't think it would happen. We are definitely excited and can't wait to welcome our 2 babies into the world.

Can I join you ladies? I've been lurking for the last couple days and there is so much knowledge and information here. It's also nice to talk to people that are going through or have gone through what I am going through. I look forward to getting to know you ladies and sharing info and experiences.

  • Thanks so much for the warm welcome ladies. Definitely looking forward to getting to know everyone =D

I know it doesn't look like it in the u/s pic but they are di-di (fraternal) twins. The u/s tech had to do an internal and turn the brightness right up to see the membrane between the 2 babies. I have my IPS (similar to the NT scan in the states) May 1st so I am hoping my ute has moved forward so they get a better look (apparently mines retroverted-- i think that's the correct term).

  • Yeah I was thinking mo-di too, but I'm sure you know better than I do. Congrats and good luck!

  • I also thought mono/di, but mine are di-di, so I'm no expert in looking at mono-di ultrasounds (apparently not di-di either, LOL)! It does make sense what you said about what the tech was doing though.

But...just because they are di-di doesn't mean they are necessarily fraternal (unless they are boy/girl, obviously). If they are same sex, they can still be identical. You just won't know until they come out and either look totally different, or have a DNA test done.

    Congrats and welcome!

They still look mono/di to me Wink

My u/s at 10 weeks looks almost exactly the same.  One big gestational sac and a thin dividing memrane.  I'd get the opinion of an MFM before they rule you to be di/di just because their are certain precautions and extra monitoring that you should have if they are mono/di.

  • I'm hopping on the mono/di train.  :-)  They look like our boys did on their ultrasounds; they had a thin dividing membrane too, but they're identical.

    Anyway, congratulations and welcome!

    What is an MFM?

Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist - a doctor who specializes in high risk pregnancies.

Your u/s looks mono/di to me too! There was a HUGE divide between my di/di twins on the u/s around the same gestational age. Did they say they actually saw 2 placentas?  Even if they have a visible membrane, if they have 1 placenta they're identical.

    Congratulations, by the way!!

The u/s tech didn't say much during the u/s. I had to ask if they were measuring at 10 weeks and what the hbs were. So I have no idea if there is 1 or 2 placenta or what. I am hoping that the next u/s tech will give me more information ( I go May 1st)

Thanks for all the info ladies. I'm sure techs have been wrong in the past.. I just took their word for it. I will definitely push at the next u/s if they aren't saying anything to me.

  • My di/di had a very noticable membrane, and I don't really see that on your u/s. Mono/di have more risks, so you definitely need to know.

As far as the MFM goes, I think most of us (I'm making up this percentage, but it's seems like at least 90% of us are seeing or saw one with a twin pregnancy, regardless of the mo/di or di/di). You should ask your doctor about that as well.

Do you continue to see your OB too or do you just go to the MFM?

This board is so awesome.. learning a ton... there might be 2 sets on my side but I've never met them or their moms so I'm on my own in the experience department.

it's up to you. a lot of us (myself included) see both your OB and MFM. some MFMs don't deliver, so that's why you still need your OB.

  • Congrats!  I agree with others that your ultrasound looks mono/di to me but I hope you find out either way at your next appointment so you know what you will be looking at in terms of number of appointments and monitoring.  Regardless, even if they are di/di, they still could be identical (if they are the same sex of course), I am a mom of di/di identicals. :)  They told me after they were born that they were almost definitely fraternal but after a DNA test, it turns out that they are in fact, identical.  I would have never known that it was possible without this board so there is a lot of great info here. :)

Exactly. Most MFM's don't deliver, so you would see them, as well as your OB. My OB saw me the same way she would see a singleton (except she did an u/s, instead of just listening for the HB everytime I saw her). The appiontment schedule was the same. In addition to her, I saw my MFM every week throughout the entire pregnancy (I'm sure this is different for everyone depending on the situation). I had all my major u/s, etc. done at the MFM's office and they dealt with any complications. My OB (well, the one that was on-call that night) delievered the twins. I think most people see both their OB and MFM.

You will learn a lot here! It's because of this board I decided to have the DNA test done on my girls. I was told they were fraternal, but they are in fact, identical. I didn't know the difference between di/di and mo/di, and all that goes with this, etc. until I started reading stuff on here!

Oh I had no idea there were 3 types of twinning (mo/mo, mo/di, di/di) and I thought that di/di were always fraternal... definitely a learning curve here for sure.
