baby position

Hello ladies,

How do you know where baby is?  I never feel her have hiccups and I'm not sure that I could tell the difference between head and rump.  Presumably, the hard, round canteloupe that I feel would be the head... if that's true then she likes to be breech in there.  I'm almost 31 weeks.  Is there anything that I can do to encourage her to go the right direction?

Re: baby position

  • I've been feeling more movement lower down, but "seeing" more movement in my upper belly.  My OB says that baby is head down, so I assume that the movement I can "see" are legs/feet/knees and the movement I feel are the hiccups and the arms/head.  But I won't know for sure until I get my fetal growth ultrasound next week!

  • I am in the same boat.  I was noticing my bump was slightly larger on the right side, maybe she's hanging out over there.  I was told sitting on a fitness ball helps put her in the right position.  Plus it feels so much better than sitting on the couch.

  • What I thought was the head definitely turned out to be the bum... My MWs can tell the position by palpating my stomach. Your doctor should be able to figure it out!

  • it is still early to worry about baby's position . my lo was transverse for quite few weeks until last week when he turned and became head down .

  • With my first 2 LOs I could never tell where LO was! I always just trusted my MW/Dr when they said LO was head down, and prayed they stayed that way. This LO has been much different and feels much MUCH closer to the "surface". My MW has confirmed he's head down since about 26 weeks, and I can feel hiccups really low so that lets me know he's still head down. Once I know he's head down then the lump I feel higher up is his bum, and in between is his back. But in terms of knees vs elbows, etc I still don't know.

And like PP  said, don't stress about getting LO head down just yet. They still have lots of time to turn :)

  • Yeah - I know.... I'm kind of ridiculous. : )

I am a FTM and I can't wait to meet this little girl so I keep thinking that if I do all the right things maybe I can see her earlier (although not too early!!!  : P).

This kind of feels like online dating.  I absolutely adore this kid, but I've never even met her.

  • I'm not able to tell where he is. I asked my OB at my last appointment and he knew the baby was head down because of where he heard the heartbeat. My OB said he could still flip over so they'll do a u/s at 36 weeks to look at his position.

  • Just found out Friday that the baby is head down. At 28 weeks he was head up and one night I had terrible pressure. They think he probably flipped that night. His heartbeat was way down low, and the dr did a little feeling around. He found the bottom and said the hard kicks on the side are feet.

  • My little guy was still flipping around until last week, and it became obvious when he was head down or head up. Either kicking above my belly button or kicking way down low. He's now in the right position and yesterday he spun his head towards the back. So now I can feel his rump.

There are a couple ways to encourage them into the right position. Putting your uterus above your shoulders. They say you can take an ironing board lay on top of it and have your SO lift it onto the edge of the couch. This is an "easy" way according to our birthing teacher. They can also see light now, so putting a flash light at the bottom of your tummy also might get the baby to follow the light.

When my little guy turns now it's very uncomfortable, so you should be able to know if it's spinning.

  • My OB has felt the baby's head through my (giant ass) belly for my 32 week and 34 week visits.  Her head is pointing down and in the correct position.  He said her back/butt is on my left side and her feet are on my right side.  Which made no sense to me until DH pointed out that she is probably folded up like a jack knife.

Either way at 31 weeks your LO still has a few weeks to flip around.  Don't get worried.

  • I got my baby to flip from transverse to head down by doing different stretches. He was sideways the entire pregnancy (from what I could tell) up until a week ago.

I was told some babies have a harder time flipping if the mother's hips are tense, so I do hip circles on an exercise ball to loosen them up. It also stretches and works your abs and back as a bonus.

Another thing to try is the cat/cow pose which is a great back stretch. Apparently being on your hands and knees will encourage the baby to go head down.  This also helps posterior babies turn anterior. I felt my LO go head down the second time I did this pose. It could have been a coincidence, but who knows.

As others have said, try not to stress about it- baby still has time to flip. But trying the things above are good for anyone to do, so it can't hurt to give them a shot! I've been doing them every day and this LO hasn't flipped back since he went vertex.

    Good luck!

ETA: Head down position was confirmed by my OB. I feel most movement up by my ribs and I feel hiccups down in my pelvis.

  • Baby girl has been head down pressing on my cervix most of my pregnancy. I can tell because of movement she has her feet in my ribs and her butt pressing on my side of my belly button and she likes to head bunt my cervix repeatedly throughout the day.
