I was at a friend's kid's birthday party yesterday and ran into someone I haven't seen in a long time. She doesn't have much social etiquette and first says "congratulations! Are you having a boy?" I said yes I am. And she says, "oh. Can tell. When I was having a boy, I had facial swelling too.." Gee thanks. Firstly, my face is NOT really swollen. I have a naturally rounded face. And even if it is, that is rude! Btw, she is still overweight with a big face! I wanted to say, "and I guess your swollen face neve went back to normal, huh?" but I stopped myself... people need to shut TFU. If they don't have anything nice to say, just don't! So what's the rudest comment you have gotten from someone during your pregnancy?
Re: "Your face is swollen so you must be having a boy"
Don't worry, the girl I work with told me that my face looked like I had three chins.... Worst part about it was, the swelling I was experiencing turned out to be pre-eclampsia and very dangerous, so they had to put me on bed rest and discuss early induction. Plus, I was admitted to the hospital for 4 days following her stupid comment.
People who say crap like that are, in my opinion, jealous, vile, and have no filter. I just ignored her because I consider the source...she's tacky for even mentioning it.
I just love the - Oh your only having one??? - especially when at 35 weeks pregnant I weight wayyyy less then the people making the comment.. I usually don't say anything rude back, that I want to, I just make it VERY obvious that I am staring at their fat hanging over their pants, or out of their tops...
I have also really liked the, wait till you have swollen feet, your rings don't fit, your belly button pops out, you can't tie your shoes etc. comments.... I can still do all of those things, and don't have fat feet or veins popping out! I run everyday, walk my dog 5 miles a day and work hard towards staying in shape..
I just want to scream at these people!!! Thankfully getting closer to then end...
Can't wait for the smart ass comments once the baby comes! - I assume they will continue!!!!
Why in the world do people think it's okay to say stuff like that?! Rude...
I get people stopping me all the time & asking if I'm having a boy. When I answer yes, all they say is that I'm definitely carrying nice, round & low... If someone made a remark about my face I'd be making THEIR face swollen.
A girl I work with just came from another country to the US and hadn't perfected english. She said "you must be having a boy because you are ugly".
She meant to say because I was broken out. But either way - NOT NICE.
Oh and I love when people say how big I am - I just say - oh you too! It's annoying at this point and my niceness is out the window : )
Oh no - I'm sorry. People are such idiots. The parent of a former student saw me the other day and asked what I was having. I told her we're expecting a girl to which she replied, "I knew it...girls take from the mother's face, and your face has changed" (from the sad face and head shaking, I take it my face has not changed for the better!). "Also, women who are having girls carry all over (as she's looking at my ass)." (Awesome. Uh - really - ugly and fat?) "When I was pregnant with my boy, my face didn't change and I only had a little ball in front." (Well, of course.)
Anyway, try not to take it personally - I know that the woman is crazy, so I can actually tell the story and laugh (complete with facial expressions and her ridiculous accent). Listen to the people who love you and your doctors/midwives.
My favorite so far was "Dr. C - you are looking ridiculous" to which I replied "As are you, Sir." which earned me a laugh... Not really the same caliber of rudeness. I honestly don't know what I would do or say if someone came up and mentioned facial swelling to me. Probably think up a really great comeback several days later. : )

Funny, I'm having a girl and the secretary at work who insisted from early on in the second tri on telling anyone coming through the office about how puffy my face got (BTW, she's the only one who seemed to see this - no one else really knew what she was talking about), insisted that that was a normal issue with carrying a girl.
People just don't know when their thoughts are unwanted :-/
Almost exactly a month ago a co-worker asked me when I was due. I told him June 12th, and while sizing up my belly he said, "If you make it that long." I smacked him with my notepad.
How about: "oh, it MUST be a girl because your hips are SO WIDE." No, ma'am, we had genetic testing so we are positive it is a boy. "No, I'm sure it is a girl, because they are REALLY WIDE." Wow, thanks a lot complete stranger, feeling pretty fantastic right about now:)
And another from a friend: "oh, now you are really starting to look pregnant. I mean I can really see it in your face and arm." Awesome, because that is where I am growing my baby:)
Um nice "friend".... sounds like your friend list needs a makeover
