Success after IF

If you got your newborn on a schedule please come in

I have never been a scheduled mama, or seen a need for it in our home, but we are getting a newborn on Monday and we will have 5 kids 3.5 and under living in our home. I am realizing without a schedule I might die lol.... I don't have time to read a book before she comes, would anyone be willing to give me a run b down on how they did this? Also any book recs would help! Thx!

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • I know babywise is controversial but this mom has a more common sense approach to it. I didn't find her until later so I didn't use this info but it may be helpful.

This, exactly.  I almost never wake a sleeping baby, but I open their bedroom door and let the sounds of the house wake them up if it is getting towards that three hour mark.

At night, I just pray for long stretches of sleep...but we love the Eat, Activity, Sleep every three hours time line.  Worked great for Parker-Man.

We were on-demand parents too but realized after a while that E/P/S sort of naturally happens.  With a newborn eating and sleeping seemed to be all DD could manage, maybe eating was playing?  But by 6-8 weeks when her awake time was increasing we did try and prevent her from falling asleep while eating which was our big challenge and get her to E/P/S more regularly.

Ditto Gypsy - I was/am a strong believer in watching babies' cues, especially at that age, but both of mine pretty naturally fell into 3 hour or so cycles by a couple weeks old.

Are you adopting another baby?! If so, congrats!

  • I read a ton of books and never followed one method specifically but did lean towards the EASY schedule. I always fed them when they woke up and then they played and slept.

I did feed DD1 a bottle right before bedtime and she became very dependent on that to fall asleep. With DD 2 I did a bottle and then let her do quiet play for 10-15 min before bed and she puts herself to sleep with no problems. So I really like this schedule of eat, activity, sleep (you can forget the "you" time, ha ha).

Have done this with all four of mine, and it has made all the difference!!!  I realize that every family and situation is unique, but I love having a predictable routine, especially with a larger family.  I honestly think I would have lost my mind otherwise.

Good luck with the new little girl.  Your home must be filled with so much joy!

    Ditto, and congratulations!

  • My best advice would be to put the other kids on a schedule.  Newborns tend to make their own schedules according to their needs.
