Nest post makes it onto MSNBC

What are your thoughts on this?

https://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/65313332.aspx

I personally don't have a big problem with it, especially since it doesn't show any personal info. I just hope they would have had the decency not to post a child's pic or personal info had it been on the original post (the image links to the original.) Maybe it will even generate interest in the site and make these boards more active again!

Re: Nest post makes it onto MSNBC

  • I have a big problem.  It links right back to the boad where the poster posted.  So even if MSNBC left the siggy pic off then once you click on it and it send you right back to TB you would get to see her siggy pic.

ETA:  completely random, but the P&CE board makes me feel dumb and uninformed...plus a lot of their posts are super long and I don't have the patience to read them.  That's my FFC.

I agree. Not cool. They should have blacked out her SN/Location and not had it link back. Or, they could have just said "a member of an online community posted...." No need for a screenshot and link back.

I agree. I feel it is up to me to ensure my privacy when posting online (hence the SN change). Anyone can find the thread without the help of MSNBC.

  • Ditto what others have said.  It is a public forum and anyone can view what we post.

Can this be my FFC too?

  • Maan. I really like having my kids cute picture in my Sig but I'm starting to wonder if I should just suck it up and take it off. tb is getting around way too much.

  •  I really don't understand the problem. This has always been a public message board.  You do not have to have siggy pics.  You do not have to reveal personal info. I love thus board, and although I dont necessarily want my stuff being linked, i wouldn't put anything out there that I'd fear being linked.

I think we all know people can search or stumble upon posts, but I have never considered that another media outlet could share it, or would want to.  If a newspaper or the TV news wanted a soundbite from me they'd have to get my okay and contact info. from me.  I think we expect we are sharing info. with TK/TN/TB community and a few others who lurk, but we don't expect MSNBC to link to our threads, with our siggies, and links to blogs.  I feel like it would have been different had they left the screenshot as is, and not linked to the full thread with her kids and blog.

I changed my siggy after the FB crapp last week.  Again, of someone stumbled upon my posts and recognized my pic (I have suggested friends going through losses check out TTCAL, etc.), that's one thing, but people who aren't even interested in TK/TN/TB and are reading a current events story could wind up here, which is different IMO.  I wouldn't want my boss or dad for example clicking the link to P&CE and recognizing ANY of those posters' SNs or siggies.

I don't post a lot of stuff I would FEAR being linked, as you said, but that doesn't mean I want TB sharing it with FB or MSNBC making it easier for us to be identified.  It just makes this little internet world seem a little smaller everyday, rather than bigger everyday.

    This exactly.

I actually doubt that thebump/nest did share it.  I'm sure they have employees or computer programs set up for searching for things they can use in their articles.

Plus anyone could take a screen shot of a thread and post it on whatever they wanted, MSNBC included.  In fact one could argue that they should  have linked to it so it wasn't "plagiarized" or some sh!t like that... not that I would argue that too hard.

Point is everything you say/post/link on here is available to the public.  If people don't like it they shouldn't post anything. (That wasn't directed at you maddie just my 2 cents on the situation as a whole)

This, I'm seriously over people complaining about invasion of privacy. it's the INTERNET, and it's PUBLIC like it or leave it.

  • In the article they tell you they used special software that tracks what people are talking about via social media and forums. TK/TN/TB did not share this.

I dont think it matters whether or not you think msnbc should have shared it. They have the right to share it. They don't have to call and get your permission. You gave your permission the second you hit post.

I'm with Kimbo. If you don't want it out there, don't put it out there. This goes for your posts, profile, signature...everything!

  • Agree...the internet is public. Plus, many of us have blogs...and unless your blog is set to private anyone can find it and the pictures on it. So...even if you don't have a siggy pic, but you link to a blog...all of that is public. Someone could even stumble upon your blog when they do a google search.

  • You know...it's crap like this that really makes me want to say eff this board, this 'community' as a whole.

WE KNOW this is a public form.  We are all very well aware of this.  But I am so sick and tired of people saying "this is a public forum blah blah blah if you don't want someone finding you, don't put it out there blah blah."  WE KNOW this.  However, I don't know about some of you, but most people I know aren't going to start seeking me out and finding this board, but when ish like this is posted somewhere else, or somehow something has linked directly to this website or board, I completely understand why people get pissed.  So quit making it sound like it's no big deal.

    Vent over.

    I heart you.

Suppose the OP on P&CE had a loss blog or IF blog.  Should she not write one on the offchance a post on TN ends up linked on MSNBC?  Really???  People do NOT expect things like that are going to happen.  But lesson learned we all should.  I look forward to boring posts about what's for dinner for the rest of TB's existence.

New vent - why is there only a broken heart icon, but not heart?

ETA - Again, my issue here is really only that MSNBC linked it back to the whole post, not just a screenshot.  If someone wanted to go the trouble of Googling her SN, fine (which, btw, includes the word b!tch, but they left that out...)  And sure, they had screenshots from Twitter too, but the difference is one can delete or change their Twitter or FB accounts within seconds, but you basically have to bl0w TB to even change your city or user name, some siggies that still say people are 80 weeks KU, nevermind delete an account.  Surprise

Sorry, but as tired as you are of us saying that it's public, I'm just as sick and tired of people being shocked that things they say here can be linked/posted/copied/read elsewhere. Of course if someone wants to post about a loss here they can. But if they don't want to chance someone IRL finding it, they need to do it under a completely anonymous screenname without their real name on their account or using an email address linked to their real name. I got outed at work when i was 5 weeks pregnant bc I posted it here and someone found it by googling my name (my real name, not my screenname) looking for my food blog. I blamed myself, not the bump.
