Alfalfa for bleeding

Hi everyone,

Quick question - I just found out that taking alfalfa during pregnancy can help elevate Vit K levels and reduce postpartum bleeding. However, I'm already almost 33 weeks along. Is it too late to start consuming it? Also, I saw that people mostly take it in pill form - is that better than just eating the sprouts?

Thanks!

Re: Alfalfa for bleeding

  • My MW said to buy the pills at the health food store following the directions on the bottle and start at 30 weeks. I'm sure you could still benefit from taking it. I just bought a bottle, about $9 for a 3 month supply and will start next week. I figure it can't hurt.

That's true - better late than never!

  • def do pill form and start 2-3 a day, the difference btwn dd1 and dd2 w/ bleeding has been crazy different.

this time ( I took  alfalfa) and I'm already having very little pp bleeding and my bleeding right after the birth was much less as well

  • I took it when I was pregnant with my daughter with no problems.  I plan on starting to take them at 30 weeks with this baby, too.  I definitely don't think you're starting too late to see benefits from it.  What dosage are you planning on taking?  Don't remember how much I took last time.

This may seem like a silly question.  Can I ask if anyone here is allergic to alfalfa?  I am allergic to hay and pollen that is airborne, but I wonder if I would be allergic to it in pill form?

I honestly have no idea.  I'd love to hear what anyone has to say.  Thanks.

eep I'm not sure, I'd ask your dr before taking it though

I'm looking at Babymoon Inn.  I've seen it and the midwives there are fantastic I just can't get over it.

The pills I got say 3 capsules/day. I don't know if it varies by type of pill, but I'll go with the listed dose.

  • That's very interesting, I didn't know alfalfa does that.

....so then, if it raises vitamin k levels in the mother's body, it would also raise the level in the baby's body as well? I'll definitely talk to my MW about this, but in all of your opinions...does taking alfalfa make it completely unnecessary for the baby to get the vitamin k shot after birth?

  • My MW said something about how the baby still needs the Vit K (they apparently don't produce it in the womb, so probably even taking the alfalfa won't provide them with enough of it). My MWs do oral administration of the vitamin over the course of a few weeks, though, without the shot. Maybe yours can do that too?
