Would you buy this house? PIP

So I'm house hunting and we found the perfect house in the perfect neighborhood at a decent price.  The problem is that there are 3 bedrooms and the middle bedroom looks like this:

Would it bother you that there are french doors in there?  It leads to a backyard thats fully fenced.  I wouldn't put our kids in there so I guess DH and I would be in there.  I'm mostly worried about intruders, although the neighborhood is supposedly nice.  Oh , and winter.  It gets freaking cold here from fall (Sept) til spring (now, and right now our heater is still on).

WWYD?

  • We use to live in a house that had French doors in one of the bedrooms that we used as our bedroom in case we had kids while living there. I was worried about intruders too but it's just like any other door just remember to lock it (I always double lock everything).  If the house was everything else I was looking for I wouldn't not buy it because of that

  • I think it's gorgeous! As long as its well insulated and won't leak heat in the winter, it makes for great light and view. I think it's very romantic. :-)

  • I wouldn't let that sway me. If you love the house and the price, I say go for it. You can get a wooden block and put it in the threshold so the door won't open.

  • As long as the glass is nice dual-pane/insulated - then I think it wouldn't be a problem.

And maybe you could get some curtains as well and that would really help with keeping the heat out in the summer and keeping the cold out during the winter. We have really nice blackout curtains over the two slider doors we have in our living room and it's made such a difference in keeping the room a nice temp all year round.

  • Ooo, thanks for the suggestions.  I like the wooden block and black out curtain ideas.

DH isn't convinced and doesn't even want to bid anymore =(.  But the rest of the house is redone, move in ready and so beautiful.  I'm sure there will be a bidding war on it though so I'm not sure we'll win but we'll see!

  • I love it! It would make a sweet playroom

  • I wouldn't think anyone would be more likely to break in those door than any others on your house.  (In fact, maybe it's less likely just b/c most intruders don't want to encounter homeowners.)  I second the PP that you could always swap it out with windows too.  If you can get that close to perfect in a house, I'd stop looking!  Good luck!

You could swap them out in the future for windows.

This. It really isn't all that difficult to change a door for a window, especially if it is vinyl siding on the exterior...it is a bit more work if it is brick or other cladding.

This is what I was going to say! Plus you can get insulated curtain panels too... once it's winter and gets dark at like 4pm, you'll have them closed most of the time anyways!

  • I would. I wouldn't let it deter me. As long as you keep them locked I don't think it would become a problem. You could also stick a rod in the door at night if you were really concerned about intruders.

Also you could get the black out curtains. Ours have a thermal backing so they keep the rooms warm in the winter. It gets super cold here as well.

  • Thanks for all the feedback!  I'm still working on DH and I think he'll break soon =).  The rest of the house truly is a beauty!
  • If DH wasn't comfortable, I'd probably keep looking.  I've seen french doors in bedrooms, and it is lovely.  If it plays on your H's fears, good luck getting any sleep.  lol

I know, I know but I just love this house sooo much!!!  And he did too until I brought the doors up.  I told him all of your suggestions here and he thinks the house is still an option so I guess we'll see.
