Short abdomen and short arm and leg bones at 20 week ultrasound

Hello, new here.  I am pregnant with my second child and just had my 20 week ultrasound.  I was sent to MFM to have them take a better look due to poor position of the baby.  It turns out they also confirmed what the OB suspected, that the baby is measuring 3 weeks behind in all leg bones, arm bones and abdomen. They are all shaped properly and appear normal except for size in comparison to the head. The head measures on date.  And everything else appeared normal.  The doctor said this could indicate Down Syndrome.  Has anyone ever encountered this?  Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.  We are actually waiting on the blood tests to come back with our odds and they are also testing for a possible viral infection that I might have had early in the pregnancy that could have been transferred to the baby.  Have you ever heard of a viral infection causing small bone measurements?  Either way I will keep you updated on our results.

It could also be asymmetric iugr. at my 21 week a/s the specialist I was seeing told me his head was measuring right on schedule & abdomen, femur & arms were behind a couple weeks. Also that me fluid was low & they said I had a 1 in 12 chance of downs. This specialist was horrible though, and reccomended things not worth repeating. my ob took care of me the rest of the pregnancy with sending me for twice weekly nsts & bpps & once a week growth/ dopplers. My baby was born at 34 weeks ( fluid dropped, breech & placenta stopped working) by cs. He doesnt have downs, hes just small. very small. he dropped off the chart a few weeks before I had him. but definatly ask your dr if they think iugr could be a diagnosis.
My little pumpkin was born at 34weeks, weighing 3lbs, due to severe IUGR & Unexplained Placental Insufficiency. He spent 49 days in the NICU. Lilypie Premature Baby tickers imageimageimageimageimageimage

Thank you very much for sharing.  I am finding it so hard to find anyone with these same signs so early on in their pregnancy.  Did you have a fully "functioning" cord and placenta at the time you were given the diagnosis of IUGR?  Everything I read seems to suggest that IUGR would be from a 2 vessel cord or issues with the placenta ( and or chromosonal ).  I am waiting on the bloodwork results like I mentioned in my first post, although either way my husband and I have decided not to pursue the amnio as suggested by the doctor.

That does sound a bit like IUGR. My LO had it and he had shorten femur length (head always measuredd on track). In my case part of the placenta was dying already.  The MFM said ot could be chromosomal but since there were no other markers he didn't think so. We didnt do any other testing. LO was born at 36 weeks and was very healthy, just small (5 pounds).

Good luck and congratulations on your precious baby!

Also, I forgot to mention my IUGR was late onset (28 weeks). The doctor said that when it occurs in the third trimester it isn't usually chromosomal releated. Not sure if that is helpful information but thought it might be important to add.
