Wish me deo stick luck!

I just found an old, empty Tom's of Maine deo stick tube...so I'm going to mix up a batch of my own deo and try to smoosh it all in there, and see if I can get a stick working :)

Planned Recipe: Equal parts of organic corn starch, baking soda and organic unrefined coconut oil. (after labor, I'd like to try this again with some lemongrass, tea tree or rose essential oil drops in).

...will report back on results!

  • I just made some about 30 mins ago for the first time :) I'm eager to try it out! I made it with some tea tree oil and orange oil. I used 5 large tbsp of coconut oil, and 1/4 cup each of corn starch and baking soda and only about 1/2 of it fit in an old Dove deodorant container, maybe a little more. No smooshing necessary since you melt the coconut oil :)

Just out of curiosity, why do you have to wait until after labor for the essential oils? Is it not safe during pregnancy?

  • I made mine for the first time today too.  I ended up using 1/4 cup each of cornstarch, baking soda and coconut oil. It all fit in one container( my DH's empty men's dove).  I stuck it in the fridge, can't wait to try it!!

ETA:  I just took it out of the fridge and it would not swivel up.  I ended up breaking the container, so I remelted in and poured it into a very small bowl.

Where did I go wrong?  Was I supposed to line the container with plastic wrap or something?

  • When I pull my homemade deodorant out of the fridge, it won't twist up at first. I generally pull it out of the fridge in the evening and by morning it has reached room temperature and I can twist it up.

  • WHOO HOO! It's working great so far. I had to wait for it to cool after melting it all together, then just spooned and shaped it into the tube. Took all of 5 min. Put it in the fridge to set, and it rolls on great. Now I'm just wondering if I risk leaving it out on the counter when it's starting to get warmer. I'd hate for it to turn into a big melty mess.

  • Adding a bit of beeswax will firm up the stick a bit. Where I live temps tend to get too warm for coconut oil to stay firm enough on it's own.
  • Well, I used it yesterday and today...no sweaty or stinky pits!  I'm excited!
