My best friend died six months after my wedding. She had been struggling with cancer, but in retrospect, she must have known she was terminal and making the most of things as I was surprised she had come to the wedding. She left behind her husband and three-year-old daughter.
I never really knew her husband, so we didn't keep up over the years. I found myself wondering about him and her daughter for some reason, and googled last night. He passed away two years ago, at age 48, leaving their 10-year-old daughter an orphan. He had never remarried. She must be 12 by now, I am guessing.
I remember vividly my friend saying that she wanted several children, she and her husband having both been only children. Of course, siblings are not necessarily an answer, but I can only imagine what she would think about the future her daughter has had. My heart aches thinking of her daughter, and I hope her grandparents have stepped forward. Just a reminder of how cruel the world can be. And a reminder as well to make sure our affairs are in order should the worst happen.
