how much breastmilk to give a 2 month old?

typing with one hand, sorry....

ds has never had a bottle, but 2 weeks from today is my birthday and we are going out for the first time without him then. i plan to get him used to a bottle before then by giving him a little pumped milk here and there.

how much milk should i have pumped for him in advance? we will leave him with my sister for probably 4-5 hours.

Re: how much breastmilk to give a 2 month old?

  • My 2 month old boy eats about 4 sometimes (rarely) 5 ounces... When I leave him with my MIL, I leave two bottles, one 4 ounce and one 5 ounce, if he needs more than 4 ounces, she can pour some of what is in the 5 ounce bottle into the 4 so you don't waste any. Hope this helps! Have a nice night out and happy birthday!!

  • DS can take 4.5 oz for a feeding.  If I was leaving him for 4-5 hours, I would want to leave 2 bottles, so 8 or 9 oz. just to be safe.

  • My dd rarely will take over 3.5 oz, usually 3. She only gets a bottle very couple days.

  • Wow your LO's take a lot from the bottle! My DD will only take 2.5oz max! Sometimes it's only 1.5oz. I know she takes more then that from me, she has to since she eats from both boobs. I would definitely introduce the bottle ASAP though since your LO is already 6 weeks old.

  • DS eats anywhere from 3-4oz bottle of BM.  I usually pump about 3.5-4oz bottles when I do pump.  So that is what we feed him if he needs a bottle because I am out.

  • I would recommend testing it out.  Try feeding one ounce at a time, and see when he's full.  Every baby is different, so it's a learning process!!

  • I must have quite the hungry boy!  (and he's not quite 2 months yet)

We've been giving my LO a bottle or two a day over the last two weeks.  During the morning/afternoon he eats 3 or 4 oz and is good to go, but in the evening or after a long nap he chows down 4-7 oz. I always leave bottles in 4 oz and 2 oz amounts.  That way if he is still hungry after the 4, we can use the 2 oz, but we don't end up wasting anything if he wasn't all that hungry.

  • Mine was 8 weeks this past Monday will take 3 oz from a bottle/. Why dont you try pumping and feed him yourself to get an idea of how much he will take at one feeding because all babies are different as you can see from the various responses.  I pump everyday to allow my husband to bottle feed him for one feeding at night for some male bonding and so I can get to the gym to feel like a whole person again.  As for your sitter you could just have her heat two to begin with and if he seems hungery still.  Heat up an ounce it a time until he is satified that way you won't waste any liquid gold.
