Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How much does your LO drink??

My DD is almost 17months and she always acts like shes dying of thirst! She gets a cup of milk when she wakes up along with breakfast then another at nap time. When she wakes up we have lunch and cup of water. then another cup of water with dinner. then milk at bed time.

She usually doesn't drink it all while shes eating just finishes the water off throughout the day.

Is that too much? Not enough? I swear she would just keep drinking and drinking if I would refill her cup all the time.

We are about to start potty training. I think thats why its on my brain... Because I dont want her peeing every 5 seconds while trying to train her. But also of course don't want her going thirsty either.

How much does your LO drink?

TIA!

Re: How much does your LO drink??

  • It sounds like enough milk.  I'd offer more water throughout the day.  Worrying about potty training shouldn't trump your child's expressing thirst.  If she can't fulfill her thirst/fluid intake needs and be potty trained, then she probably isn't ready to be potty trained.

Oh, I just looked at LOs age.  Um, at 1y4m that's very early on the potty training.

  • I meant with us starting to potty train I dont want to fill her full of water. That's what I give her now because I would give more water and she would get water logged and end up spitting it up. So I wasn't sure if I was giving too much.

Well she tells me when she needs to potty and when she needs to poop and goes straight to the bathroom...  So I feel like we need to start trying.

  • My LO drinks about 20 ounces of milk and usually at least 8 ounces of water (I try to push more)- the more important thing to look at, though, is the number of wet diapers. DS usually has about 5-7 wet diapers a day.

I agree with PP that she's early early to potty train, but it does help to start getting them acclimated to the potty idea!

  • DD drinks about 16 oz. of milk a day, and 10-20 oz. of water a day, depending on the day.  Sometimes we fill her sippy (10oz.) a third time towards the end of the day, but she doesn't usually finish it.  I always thought she was drinking too much water, but I've kinda let that go.  If she's thirsty, she's thirsty!  Like PP said, as long as she's getting enough wet diapers and they're not dark urine, I figure the amount of water she's getting is fine.

I can't offer any potty training advice, we're definitely not there yet.

  • DS gets about 4 ounces of milk with each meal and with 1 snack a day (a total of about 16 ounces, some days we give a little more).  DS also gets two 3 ounces of juice (watered down) throughout the day and then 1-2 glasses of water.  He always seeems so thristy also.

DS is the opposite; he doesn't drink much.  He isn't crazy about milk so it's mostly water.  Maybe 3 cups a day.  His pee is light in color and he has a sippy of water available all day so I'm not worried about dehydration.  But just goes to show you it can vary kid to kid!
