Success after IF

HS graduation gift?

DH's nephew is graduating from high school in a few weeks.

What's the norm for a gift these days?  When I was a senior it was usually a check (some of my friends received fairly large checks!), and/ or a sentimental type item.  If that's still the case, any suggestions as to how much or what to get?

If specifics matter (they might not!) - like I said, it's DH's nephew.  We're not very close with him - they live 20 minutes away and we see them maybe 3 times a year.  DH and his sister (the graduate's mom) just aren't close because of the 10 year age difference.  But still!

Also- we can't make his celebratory dinner for reasons beyond our control.  I feel awful about it.  (And perhaps feel the need to make up for it.)

He doesn't yet have any definite plans but will likely stay at home and go to community college.

And, finally - money is tight around this house :). (Both his family and we usually do $30ish for birthdays, and I know this would have to be more, but just how much more?)

He has a huge family and I doubt our gift will even register on his radar, but I want to do right by my SIL, kwim?

Re: HS graduation gift?

  • Money is such a personal decision, based on how close you are to the person and how much you can afford to give. I usually do $50-$100 for graduations. But that said money does add up and I am sure any amount will be appreciated. College is expensive - even if staying home!

I think you can never go wrong with $ and I think anything in the $50-100 range would be more than appropriate.  I know a number of graduates that use the money for big purchases like a laptop for college.

  • I would say $50 for high school grad would be plenty.

  • i agree that $50 should be fine.

  • I agree with the $50-100 range for a cash gift.  If he is going away to college and you can drop off the gift you could put together a "laundry basket" which would include:

    Laundry basket (obviously)

    Laundry bag

    Detergent

    Dryer sheets

    Shout (or something similar)

and instruction on how to work a washing machine.

It is a cute gift for a boy going off on their own, and they will actually use it.

  • We give family $50 for graduation.

I seem to be the cheap one here but for my cousins and dh's cousins who we aren't really close too I give $25.
