Me and DH are expecting and are considering CDing. However, we know very little about it. I want to hear how all of you girls do it! For example how many diapers do you have? How often do you wash? Do you ever use disposables? Tell me everything! We don't know much about it yet!

Re: Tell me all about it!
The FAQ has some amazing info. Also Lurk for a while and almost all of your questions will be answered
For me I find that you need at least 12 diapers. The more the better. Can never have to many. I prefer GroVias and Fuzzibunz. For night time I like fitteds and wool.
I hand wash every other day. Only use disposables in emergency cases (Zero dry diapers)
Good luck!
Our little girl is 9 months old. We have 22 diapers that we like to use and 7 that we can use in a pinch. We wash every other or every 3rd day. However, when she was a newborn it was quite different. We washed just about every day since newborns poop so much!! We never use disposables.
When she was a newborn we had 18 Indian cotton prefolds and 3 Thirsties DuoWrap covers and 2 Econobum covers. Then I bought a Bummi's starter kit for $20 from somebody I knew who hadn't used it at all. It had 24 prefolds and 6 covers. These days we're using BumGenius pocket diapers, Green Mountain Diaper workhorse fitted diapers, and some WAHM fitted diapers I bought from Etsy. We have Thirsties DuoWrap covers in size 2, but we mainly use fleece soakers that my mom made for us.
Accessories: - a pack of snappi's to use with prefolds or snapless fitted diapers
-2 wetbags to use at home (either hanging ones or pail liners to go in a garbage can)
-2 small wetbags to use on the go (one in the diaper bag, one at home in the wash)
-fleece liners to wick moisture away from baby and to allow you to use non-CD-safe diaper cream if needed
-drying rack to lay your covers or pocket shells out to dry
-hemp or cotton doublers to add extra absorbency for overnight diapers (when baby is older and starts sleeping longer)
-cloth wipes - we just use baby washcloths. You'll probably want a lot of them. It's nice to use cloth wipes with cloth diapers, because you can just throw the wipe in the wetbag or pail with the dirty diaper instead of having to have a garbage can nearby.
I hope that helps! The FAQ's also have a lot of information, I'm sure, but I remember being overwhelmed looking at it when I was pregnant because of all the abbreviations. Everyone does cloth diapering a little differently, but I just wanted to tell you what we do so that you have at least one example.
Jess & Adam, married 2009, precious Audrey born in 2011. BFP 1/6/13, 6-wk MMC discovered at 9 wks 2/11/13. D&C 2/18/13, second D&C 4/23/13 for retained placenta.
BFP 8/24/13!! EDD 5/1/14, delivered healthy and sweet Zoey Leanne on 5/5/14 by repeat c-section.
Definitely worth the investment. We have twins and use several brands, Fuzzi Bunz, Grovia, Bum Genius, and what ever we can get on sale. I like Fuzzi Bunz and Bum Genius best. We built up our stash to 24 CD's per baby. Do laundry ever other day and have spares just in case. Other must haves:
Diaper Sprayer
3 wet bags, 1 for dirty diapers, 1 for wet clothes, and a back up
1 pail liner
about 36 cloth wipes per baby
We also use a garbage can with an electronic lid, so when we change a diaper, it is so much easier to get the diaper in the can without having to touch anything.
Hope this helps!
I love this question...! warning: LONG ANSWER
I love CD-ing and my mom and hubby totally love it too. It is not hard if you choose a method that is right for you and your family. Seriously do some research about pre-folds and flats, fitteds, pockets and AIO's. dirtydiaperlaundry.com is my go to for questions. She has reviewed 100's of CD's.
I use pockets and AOI's, they are easy and not intimidating for hubby. My hubby prefers AIO's because his hands don't quite fit for stuffing pockets. We only used sposies in the hospital but for baby 2 I won't even then.
Recomendations:
get NB sized dipes, OS just aren't the same. I had both and tried the OS on weekly to see, some brands began to fit around 4 weeks but some jjust began to fit at 8.
Thirsties AIO- I love it and so does hubby, it is my absolute fav I wish it wasn't the last one I bought (finished my stash with) because I can't wait to buy more
Shop somewhere like kellyscloset.com where there are free promo codes depending on your order amount, this way you can get a free surprise dipe that you may not have tried and you may fall in love with
Buy used if possible especially for NB sizes or when you are still learning what you like
Fave Dipes:
Thirsties AIO- comes in 2 sizes so it is a happy medium between OS and sized; easy to use cause its an AIO but can be stuffed if need be; and its pretty inexpensive; the cloth that touches baby's skin keeps her dry; con- doesn't fry as quickly but if you turn it inside out it helps.
Swaddlebees NB- I just like the way they fit and that it still fits with 2 more settings (she is 10 weeks, and has out grown her BG NB's); dry time is great, super absorbant; con- kinda expensive.
BG FreeTime- (I like thier pockets too, but hubby prefers AIO) Quick dry time, not too expensive, plenty absorbent with room to stuff; con- bulky (because its a OS
Things I have learned in 10 weeks of CD-ing:
*I prefer sized dipes with rise settings (I bought Fuzzibunz smalls that she still doesn't fit and they don't adjust) I feel like they are a better investment than sizes you will have to replace more often, but fit better than OS that are bulky when they are tiny
*Doing diaper laundry isn't like your laundry (it's not daunting) at first we did everyday because we had 14 NB dipes, now I do everyother day.
*Don't CD if you have a shopping problem. I hate shopping and spending money, seriously, I feel guilty for buying anything that is not a necessity. But I am addicted to CD's
*It is not hard and is rewarding knowing that you are doing something good for your baby and the earth
We have over 50 diapers, but for full time diapering washing every other day, you will need around 30. This gives you the opportunity to stretch the wash to every third day if you have to.
If I could do it all over again, I would have done prefolds and covers in the newborn stage, instead of spending all the money and buying newborn AIO's. I've used prefolds a few times and they are alot easier than you would think.
Read the FAQ, you will learn so much from it. Also, check out www.theclothdiaperwhisperer.com Tons of helpful blogs.
