Naming privates. Just curious

So my husband has decided its his job to name our LO's private. So I ask, why do men get to name their private but not women. Or at least that's what it seems like.

Re: Naming privates. Just curious

  • They already have names; penis and vagina.  DH has not named his penis and I did not know this was common occurance.

  • My BF would probably kill me if he knew I was telling this to other people, but he named his.  I told him not to call it that in front of me though, I think it's way too weird and in no way is it a turn on haha.

  • so which of these names did he give it?

But for serious, I think a dad naming his son's is a bit.....um....unnecessary?  Is there going to be a day he sits him down and explains that no, that is not just his penis, it's "Mr. Winky".

And how does your husband plan on using this name?  During diaper changes?  How often should your husband be actually referring to your son's penis?  I hope most of the time it would be in a medical context.   So... "Mr. Winky has some discharge?"

  • DH's parents called his privates(when he was little) his "dinky pipe".

We will not be calling it that.

  • DINKY PIPE? Oh my..

I swear my mom referred my vag as my tee hiney. Wtf? She also called pee "tee tee" so maybe theres a connection.

  • We call DS's his penis and DD's her vulva (we are generally just talking about this outside part with her so far).  Or sometimes I do say private parts.  We don't have nicknames though.

  • We will use refer to private parts (boy and girl) as their privacy.

I know they have real names and that's great for later in life but I don't want my two year going around saying penis and vagina. That's too grown up for me.

I like the idea of saying privacy because that way the child knows its a body part that only he (or she) should see, touch, etc (besides mom and dad and doctors).

I get my opinion may be unpopular to some but I put a lot of thought into my decisions and it's the beat for our specific family.

  • Ya, I haven't gone this route with DD.  I haven't even referenced it other than to family when discribing her rash going up to her 'hoo-hoo'.

Just to share, and not to get too serious but I found this interesting.  My gf was always SOOOOOO candid when showing off that her baby boys know their body parts, or when she would need to reference their privates such as "___, why are you holding your penis?  Do you need to go to the bathroom?"  So one day I asked why she uses the actual medical term and not a nickname and this is what she told me...

She is an early education teacher and long ago during her schooling, she came across a situation/advice/whatever, she learned that nicknaming a child's private parts could cause some confusion should they ever need to describe a problem to someone else, ie pain, discomfort, a situation including unnessecary touching, etc.  If a child needs to disclose a problem to someone at school or someone that does not know the nickname/term you have chosen to use with your child, there may be some confusion causing additional harm, lack of attention or action.

I found this interesting, so I just wanted to pass it on.  Not to be a doom and gloom cloud on this convo and I am definitely no judgment, but when it comes to my kid, yes I'll be one the to make the final decision but I'd like to hear other aspects of why others choose to do things differently.  It may come in handy for when I need to make a decision.

I agree with all of this.

I like this idea. We will be doing the same with DS. You would be surprised how many children think it's okay to flash their private parts to each other. I've had two third graders partake in this... It definitely becomes the responsibility of the parents to tell their children its an area that not everybody gets to see.

I also think this is hilarious!!

My DH doesn't have a nickname for his and frankly, I think that it would be weird if he did.  We use the word vagina to our DD because that's what it is.   No nicknames for us.

  • Haven't decided yet, but when my cousin was little I couldn't figure out how to reference it so I ended up calling it her downstairs and now she still calls it that lol.

  • My DD calls it her "potty spot". I'm ok with a nickname as long as it is closely related to the medical name. I didn't think that "potty spot" was too far off. Of course we still call a butt, a "butt". I guess we'll call it the same thing for our DS.

Haha!  My DD is 6, and she calls it her "bottom".  She refers to her butt as her "booty".  I'm not sure where she got these terms because I usually refer to them as her privates.

Along those lines my brothers called theirs "dinkers" when they were little..lol

I think we are gonna go the "privates" route.

  • We call my nephew's his "pee-pee" I think it's pretty obvious that he means his penis. I would think it was weird if a 3 yr old was running around saying penis. Idk what we will say to DD yet but I don't think I'll have a toddler using the word vagina. That is weird.

  • FI and I joke around some times giving "him" names, we always forget what they are and have to rename "him" LOL... obviously we're fooling around while doing this ;)

I originally thought this was a post about what we're going to private parts around our LO's. In that case, I doubt we'll give the parts any names although FMIL called them an Annie and a Louie with the kids so we may go that route. As biologically correct as it is, many schools frown on children using the terms vagina and penis.
