Transition to Toddler Bed

E somehow got out of his crib at 3:30 am this morning....have no idea how he did that.  He was awake and I had gone in to tell him to go back to sleep.  I was drifiting off and next thing I hear is DH saying "What the heck..." and E happily walking into our room to "sleep on daddy's bed".  I guess we will be converting the bed this weekend-especially if E can show me how to get out of the crib this morning again.  I am not looking forward to having a toddler who can escape from his bed.

Any suggestions on how to make the transition easier.  I am going to use a pool noodle as a bed rail tonight (to make sure he will sleep in a toddler bed versus having to put the rail back up.

Re: Transition to Toddler Bed

  • We transitioned from his crib straight to a full sized bed, as he has a convertible crib, and we want to keep the crib assembled for now in case we are blessed enough to have another child.

We put one side of his bed against the wall, and bought a rail from BRU for the other side.

I put him to bed the first night, and he got out a lot for about 5-10 minutes, and I just kept picking him up, and putting him back in. He got the point, and stayed in. We've had great success with his big boy bed. He sleeps so much better, and we haven't had any issues with him constantly getting out. The transition went so much smoother than my husband and I could have ever expected.

We took Matt with us to pick out his big boy bed, and his sheets. He thought it was pretty cool picking out Cars sheets. We made a huge deal out of it, and what a big boy he was. We also bought some new pictures for his room, and kept stressing how he is such a big boy, and gets to sleep in a bed like mommy and daddy. Good luck!

  • We just put Ry in a full bed and he never got out...hope it goes as easily for you
  • We took the side off her crib and put on a rail.  She hasn't gotten out of bed once and she still sleeps great!  Hope you have success.

  • Jacob had fallen out of his crib a couple of times, but he had never intentionally gotten out of his crib.  We moved him when he was 2 years, 10 months to a full size bed and he has done awesome!  Its amazing, but he doesn't even get out of his bed.  He chatters in there and calls for us and then when we go in, he'll climb out of bed.  I know that it won't last forever, but its nice that he doesn't get out and we're loving that.  He's done really well with the transition.  I hope E does too!

  • The transition went fine for us too, and she never has fallen out (initally she was in a toddled bed, but went to a twin) and we never used any kidn of bed rail.

We made a big deal, got cool sheets and stuff, and talked it up. Yes, sometimes she gets out and walks out, but we tell her it is bedtime, back in bed, and rewarded her for awhile for staying.

We wound up transitioning DDs when they were a little over 2 because one could consistently climb out.  We had to do a little room rearranging and took out the double bed we had in there with their cribs along with the rocker/recliner.  What they have now is a dresser and low bookcase (both anchored to the wall).  We did very little prep since it was a shock that DD could climb out and DDs did great.  We do have a child-proof door knob cover on the inside of their door so they can't get out and wander around, even now.  The first night was a little rough.  The DD that didn't climb out wound up crying for a while and falling asleep in front of the door.  I just put her into the bed and after that, there were no problems.  Occasionally someone will fuss before falling asleep, but they both do a great job staying in their bed.

We have never had rails on their beds (they are only 6 inches or so off the ground) and they've only fallen out a few times.  One did insist of sleeping on the edge of the bed for a while so that probably didn't help. :-)  Even when they fell out, they just got back into their bed and fell back asleep.

Naps are a different story, but we were having issues before transitioning them.  What I've gone to doing is putting them in pack n plays in separate rooms for naps and they've done much better with that.
