Whole day's pumped milk down the drain!

My poor little man!  Apparently, a batch of milk from a couple days ago turned sour.  I didn't realize it and had made bottles for him.  He took the first one this morning and then proceeded to throw up the whole bottle about 5-10 minutes later!  Thankfully (and oddly enough) I had him sitting in his empty tub in the bathroom (mama had to pee!) and it caught it all.  So much throw up!

I immediately noticed a funny smell and went to check the milk (after taking care of him, of course) - all sour smelling.  I am actually surprised he drank the bottle!  After smelling it, I gave it a little taste - definitely off!  So, 30+ oz of pumped milk just went down the drain!!!  I'm so bummed.

Any ideas on what can make milk turn sour?  I don't go beyond 3 days in the fridge.  It is stored in a sealed glass bottle.  I don't add to the bottle until freshly pumped milk has come to refrigerator temperature.  I don't know what I did, but I don't want to do it again!!!

Re: Whole day's pumped milk down the drain!

  • Oh my goodness!  I'm so sorry - what a bummer!  I just had to pump and dump for 24 hours after surgery due to all of the drugs they gave me (pumping to maintain supply).  Pouring that freshly pumped milk down the drain just about made me cry, and I knew ahead of time I'd be doing it.  We work so hard to make it!

Did anyone stand in front of the open fridge door for a ridiculously long amount of time?  Sometimes I have to fuss at SO because he'll leave the fridge or freezer door open the whole time that he's getting food.  It can definitely reduce the shelf-life of stored milk if the temperature of the fridge fluctuates too much because the door isn't staying shut.

I am normally totally with you on this, but when faced with 30+ oz, I just had to be sure before throwing it away.  It is a little weird.

  • Migen - I don't think so, but I keep the milk stored all the way in the back, just in case.

heymommy - no power outages.  good thought!  we have clocks that always blink if we lose power even for a minute - nothing this week.

I'm just so baffled as to what caused it to go bad.

  • Poor little guy!

Do you combine more than 1 days worth into a container?  Maybe there was a small bit left over from earlier in the week that went bad and took the fresh stuff with it.

Nope.  Only one day at a time.  I try to be so careful!!

It does suck and I have no real advice... but 30 ozs from one day! I am lucky if I get 18ozs pumped a day. I would be totally upset if I had to dump that much.
Is it possible you ate something new and maybe that affected your milk? IDK if thats possible but I guess thats the only thing I can come up with.
I would monitor your milk for the next few days and see if it continues to get sour quick, if so it might just be something you are eating maybe. And you might wanna talk to a doc about it or something?

Yeah, I have a bit of an oversupply.  It is making for a great freezer stash though.

I was thinking about it being something I ate/drank at this point because I can't think of anything else.  The only thing really new I had that day was Crystal Light, which I don't normally drink.  I had to pitcher next to me like I normally have my water pitcher, so I drank more of it than I probably should have.  I don't know if artificial sweetener can mess up your milk, but that is the one thing I have been able to zero in on.  Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.  My other bottles in the fridge are fine, thank goodness (I am about 3 days ahead in milk, so I store each day in the fridge in it's own bottle - after day 3, I freeze).

  • Are you sure it was sour? Could it have been excess lipase?

Yeah.  Pretty sure.  It wasn't soapy tasting.  It was like rancid/sour cow's milk.  It smelled different than all of the other stored milk I had.
