BLW, nursing to sleep, nursing on demand, co-sleeping - food amount ?

Hi Ladies -  My DD is almost 9 months old and I nurse her to sleep for both her naps, I nurse on demand, and she sleeps in bed with us and nurse throughout the night fairly often to get back to sleep.

Here's my question: We are doing BLW, but she doesn't eat very much at all. Today she had about 1/4 of a mango and about 6 noodles of mac-n-cheese.

Am I nursing her too often? I have a nap/sleep schedule but no feeding schedule. She doesn't ever seem hungry for breakfast because she just came off a all night nursing binge.

Should I change things up? Or does this sound relatively normal for BLW?

TIA

  • That's about what my 9 month old is doing too.  As long as she's still growing, then everything is fine from what I understand.  I read on kellymom that some BF babies don't really start eating anything substantial until 12-18 months.

That says that at 12 months, being 75% breastfed / 25% solids is good, so honestly I wouldn't (and didn't) worry about it. DS isn't a big solids eater, but he's growing and happy and meeting milestones. Breastmilk is pretty nutritious stuff. Just make sure to offer high iron foods frequently. Smile

  • It sounds normal to me. We are fans of the adage, "Food before one is just for fun." In other words, baby's primary nutrition should be BM (if BFing). At that age, DS would have days here and there of zero solids.
  • Yep. My LO didn't really get into solids for "real food" until well over a year. She has finally started eating 3 "meals" a day, and is down to nursing 2-3x a day, and none at night. (We night-weaned at 21 months) BM is still really good for them, even past 1 year.

  • Sounds fine. Some babies don't get into solods until they are a little older. My older son was 14 months before he started eating a significant amount, my younger son was about ten months. It really just depends on the baby. Try not to worry!

  • Your milk or formula is what really counts right now. If you think of "solids" like samples, your babe is just taste testing those things right now. If you are always feeding milk or formula, then offering solids, your baby will get everything they need. :)
